I was lucky enough to join a group of (mainly) Canadian fans on a tour of the Corrie outdoor set on Saturday morning - the get together was arranged for the 50th anniversary. It was amazing being allowed to look around the street for around 40 minutes. I was surprised how short the street looked at first and how small the houses are (have been on there before but not since 1996 when I was 15!).

The day before we got a location tour of various places they go to film, mainly in Salford. Places like the red rec, Audrey's house, Weatherfield Quays (which is actually Salford Quays), the church, the registry office where Jason escaped via the toilet window, the canal where Martha's boat was, the weatherfield town hall (which is actually in Ashton Under Lyme), where Richard drove into the canal/David drove into the Canal, where Tony tried to drown Roy.

The tour guide was very good and knew lots about Corrie having done a lot of work there for many years. When someone mentioned the amount of cast that have been axed recently he said not to be surprised if at least another 6 get axed as they are looking to reduce the cast. He also said they dont film on Saturdays but film on Sunday-Friday.

When we were at Salford Quays it was mentioned there were talks going on about Corrie relocating to Salford Quays but nothing has been officially confirmed. When I was talking to David Nugent who gave us the tour of the outdoor set, I asked and he said they have just spent a lot of money upgrading the Corrie set for the HD so it will be staying put for at least 2 years. I asked about Maria and whether she is returning long term and he said she is but wont be living on the actual street but will be in the show.

Also im sure most of you know but thought id spoiler tag this, the factory was all boarded up and Tony dies. Apparently they were some of the most expensive and exciting scenes ever filmed for Corrie so im really looking forward to watching them

As usual I met some of the cast at the studio gates including Jane Danson, Alison King, Craig Gazey, Malcolm Hebden, Michelle Keegan.

Will post some photos once ive sorted them out. I took so many on the set.

Really interesting stuff Jez. Sounds like a dream come true! Smile

Glad you had a good time. Happy they are reducing the size of the cast, it is too large. Also interesting we heard nothing of this massive revamp to prepare the show for HD.

I'm fascinated to see how different the show looks on 31 May - surely will be obvious from the off? Even if they tried, with the new cameras, lighting and sets the show will look at least a little new. Wonder if they may try a filmic effect - we know how well that goes down in soapland!

Or have we already seen the revamped sets in non HD episodes?

Phil Collinson clearly ordered the change, since Kim Crowther stated in a (fairly recent) interview she didn't know about HD yet as the sets "would need to be upgraded" and that "there are no plans to change the titles"

Hmm

Fantastic read Jez - your so lucky! Laughing

On the Tony storyline - I heard (not sure if it was true) but they were due to film the scenes on the same day as the 1st Leader's Debate - so it had to be delayed - you hardly wantexplosions going off with the PM there! Laughing

Will be looking forward to the photo's! Very Happy

Was it me or did picture quality look even better today on Corrie? The scenes in the pub looked good, they looked as though they where filmed in HD, but not shown in HD, just upscaled.

It was - I cant believe I was there! I only actually knew I was getting a tour of the outside set about 3 weeks ago. For about a year ive known about the location tour and get together with the Canadian fans but they only confirmed the tour of the outside set a few weeks ago. We were told 15 minutes to look around and take pics but David was really nice and more than happy to let us stay longer.

David didnt say a lot about the HD episodes - just they have recently started shooting them. I asked how far in advance do they film and he said currently they are 8 weeks in advance. They are also going to build a new street further down Victoria Street (passed Victoria Court and running alongside the big Warehouse building.) Whether this is meant to be just down the road from Coronation Street in the storyline or whether it is just a set for somewhere else in Weatherfield (if you get what I mean) I don't know. I do know they are hoping to cut down on the amount of location filming - stuff like Dev and Sunita's wedding, where Liam was killed and the enterance to Carla's flat (which is actually the enterance to where they film the inside scenes) have been filmed in the Granada complex as its much easier and less expensive to go on location so they will be looking to have more of 'Weatherfield' in the Granada complex by the sound of it.

Thanks.

yes apparently this is true. I read in one of the soap mags that the Tony scenes are some of the most expensive ever filmed for Corrie so I cant wait to see them

That's interesting and brilliant news. Wonder if this is all Phil Collinson...

It could be that it's actually HD now but thy're not broadcasting it in HD yet. In February, ITV showed the first episode of Midsomer to be filmed in HD but in SD!!

Emmerdale has been shot on HD cameras for the last two years and doesn't look as good as Corrie.

I would imagine so. Ive been impressed with what he has done so far especially axing some characters! Kim Crowther had her leaving party a couple of weeks ago so Phil is definately in the driving seat now and planning changes but we will prob have Kim's storylines on screen for a while.

ITV is to run Coronation Street in the prime 9pm slot each night for a week – the first time the soap has been scheduled in such a way – in an effort to capitalise on the start of live Britain's Got Talent episodes.

The new ITV1 schedule, which will run from 31 May to 4 June, brings together the start of BGT's live broadcasts with the climax of a Coronation Street storyline involving killer Tony Gordon's prison breakout and the taking of hostages.
