In other words, ITV are once again using soaps to beef up other programmes. I reckon eventually Countrywise will be axed and Corrie will be on all week, despite the fact they're already overworked.

Also, The Bill being on a 9pm is not for "the first time in its 25 year history" as the Guardian states.

Agreed. When you consider Corrie is ITV's most valuable asset by far, you'd have thought they'd have treated it with kid gloves, rather than using it as a ratings prop and shifting it around the schedule so much. It's not that long ago that they replaced the Sunday episode with a second Friday one.

Not surprised - with The Bill moving they effectively had 3 hours to fill at 8pm midweek, and I thought the soaps might take one of them. I guess this rules out a return to Sunday then, which is what I expected to happen in weeks it was displaced by the football.

The annoying thing too is we effectively lose two-hours of primetime TV due to the decision - not just the hour ITV are giving Emmerdale and Corrie, but also it's inevitable BBC1 won't compete against it, so an hour there too. And I'm sure Corrie will continue to crop up on Wednesdays, or they'll be Emmerdale specials, when ratings drop significantly in non-football weeks.

And how long until the BBC claim the slot for a 5th EastEnders episode?

As Champions League football moves to Wednesdays it was well known that Corrie was going to move elsewhere. 8.30pm Thursdays is better than 9.45pm Wednesdays like it was last time ITV used to show Wednesday football

I agree, although I cant say im surprised by this news. ITV are slowly changing Corrie's traditional schedule of Sun, Mon, Wed and Fri. Now Mon and Fri are the only days of the traditional Corrie scheduling pattern left.

Be interesting to see what goes on Wed during non football weeks and also Tues at 7.30pm.

For a while during the 2001/02 season of the Champions League they did show Corrie at 8.00pm on Tuesdays.

Although I'm slightly sceptical about this permanent move, it does seem like a good idea to beef up Thursdays and especially the new look Bill.

A better answer would have been to move Corrie to 7pm on Football Wednesday's and have an hour long Emmerdale on the Thurday between 7-8pm. A good solution to the problem rather than risk Corrie losing viewers by moving it from its traditional slot.

Ive been watching Corrie at 7.30pm longer than I can remember and now more episodes will be screened at 8.30pm rather than 7.30pm. Also Corrie on a Thursday just doesnt seem right.

My thoughts exactly, I think the gap between the Monday night episodes is too long by having the next show on Thursday. Having an episode in the middle of the week spread Corrie out nicely over the week.
However, I certainly will still be watching the greatest soap on TV! Very Happy

Me too - we will be having 3 episodes in the space of just over 24 hours and then a huge gap folllowed by another 2 episodes and another huge gap. We never had to go more than 2 days without an episode before with the old Sun/Mon/Wed/Fri format.

Me too - and yes its definitely the greatest soap on tv!

The bottom line is that ITV have got little else guaranteed to bring in a decent audience these days. But they could yet kill the goose that lays the golden egg. It is ironic that Crossroads (never as good as the Street, but which drew huge audiences in its prime) was reduced from five to four episodes per week because the then regulator (ITA or IBA) thought there were too many episodes to maintain consistent "quality." As far as I'm concerned Emmerdale lost it years ago.
