Ah I get what you mean steve. Well spotted. Can't believe I hadn't noticed that before.

As for Simon, I don't think you can deny he's a talented little actor. It's not simply because he's a child - how many five year olds could do what he does? It's much more than that. It's a bit like criticising us for calling Becky a good actress. "Why? Because she's playing a human being?! Maybe that's because she IS a human being!"

And anyone who calls EastEnders 'realistic' is talking out of their backside. Soaps are meant to be escapism, not a social commentary.

I also agree with whoever said we need to go back to three episodes a week. It will never happen but it should. Corrie could be so much better if they didn't have to pad out double episodes with filler like Uncle Umed and Dev...

Despite being a true blue Southerner I have started watching Coronation Street more and more (probably because of an insistant lady friend) lately and I must say that the set seems much more realistic than that dreaded rival beginning with E. However the storylines are non-existant and are just fillers with the cast playing either gay or ginger weird people with over the top northern (or should that be narfarm?) accents.

Those accents are a big turn off for me. However in E hadly anyone has an accent so it is much more bearable. It actually has storylines that last more than one episode. I must admit it is getting a bit slow but tonights episode should give it a kick! E combines seriousness and funny moments perfectly whereas Coronation Street tries to be funny all the time and makes it seem so unrealistic that you think you are watching Live At The Apollo.

Oh and for those who are wondering if I have an accent, then yes I do, it is a slightly scaled down version of the cockney accent.

Small Print: I am not judging anyone who watches Coronation Street, I myself watch it from time to time, these are just the opinions of oneself.

So you complain Corrie isn't realistic enough, then you complain there are too many people with Northern accents in a soap set in Manchester? Hate to break it to you but people in Manchester do have Northern accents. Or maybe you think it'd be more realistic if they all spoke like Alastair Yates.

And as for people not having much of an accent in EastEnders, "you're avin' a larf ain't cha"?

Corrie's managed to get a BAFTA nomination after all - in the 'audience award'. It's been shortlisted alongside The Apprentice, The X Factor, Outnumbered, Skins and Wallander. The public will be able to cast their vote by phone, text message or online from today until 25 April, the day before this year's ceremony.

Not sure of it's chances as a few of the other shows seem more voter-friendly. Good luck to them anyway.

I agree, Spencer. I'm sure most people in London don't speak like that, but EastEnders aim for the stereotypical character. I always found it a big turn-off and as a result I have probably watched only a couple of episodes in the last 10 years.

I've just voted for Corrie, hope other people will do the same - make it the "best programme of 2008"

ould up ere - if we tlkin bout accents in soaps

Enders is the god-awful London-centric accent (can't stand it)
Corrie is steretypical Manc accent - bad enuff
Emmerdale must surely have the soap with most Bolton accents in it - but generically what type of accent is it - a northern or a southern or something else? I know a broad Lancastrian (although set in Yorkshire) accent - again Northern
Hollyoaks - has to be the cheshire-set accent (well it is set in Chester) - again a northern accent!

seems to me that the northern accent is more easily acceptable than the southern one!

The Bill, Waterloo Road, Holby and Casualty also have strong links with the north and the northern accents!!!

Very Happy Chris, in Amsterdam, slowly teaching the Dutchies the art of the Northern accent and words Very Happy

Wooo Hooo - just realised that this is my 1300th post since I joined!!! Very Happy

I'm sorry, but have you any idea how ridiculous that sounds to those living outside London?

The accents in EastEnders are every bit as strongly defined as those you'll find in Emmerdale or Corrie.

The fact that you describe your own accent as a "scaled down cockney" would explain why your ear is more attuned to that accent - but to say they don't have one is nonsense - and reaffirms that London-centric attitude I find so objectionable.

That said, accent snobbery is rife throughout the UK - and many from the east coast of Scotland won't engage with the west-based River City because of the accents.

Personally I love the variations of accents throughout the UK. Its part of what makes Britain great.

Still - no accents on EE?

Don't pee on my head and tell me its raining, dear.

Why has this suddenly turned into a Corrie Vs Eastenders thread - I want to talk about Corrie in this thread! Smile

On the subject of accents I love the Manchester and Liverpool accents - my accent is a strong South Wales one - would that annoy you too?

Great to hear Corrie have a nomination in the Baftas but it's still disappointing that they didn't in the Best Continuing Drama category after the mainly high standard of episodes this past year (IMO)

I think accents make up the individuals. Working in a Cumbria school I love the kid's accent with the exaggerated 'o' sound so that 'coat' sounds like 'court' for example,

I have a Manchester accent, or had. I had it knocked out of me in my school in Northamptonshire where I was told I sounded like I'd come from Coronation Street and made to say 'Mummy' not 'Mammy' and 'barth' not 'bath' Mad

(until me 'Mam' went down and had a go at teachers and nowt like that 'appened again Laughing )

back to Corry the only way that EE is better is the more racial mix of characters.

Saying that there are no accents in EastEnders is the funniest thing I've ever heard in this thread. It's like saying there were no notable accents in Brookside!
