I don't agree that Frosty sorted it out at all. Yes, it's very easy to blame it on the scheduling but the fundamental problems have been there for a long time now, and it's taken the Friday double to highlight their utter incompetency. If he was any sort of producer and if they were any sort of team then then they'd have embraced the challenge. Instead they've acted as though they don't know what they doing and what we see now is the result... Well done Steve.

Nah, its only since the Friday double was introduced it got really repetitive. Storylines went around in circles enough before but that has got worse since then. Im not "blaming" it on the scheduling, im saying in my experience I find the Friday doubles hard going, it's bad enough on the Monday but on a Friday I find it a real struggle especially going back after that half hour break.

Well what about Kieran Roberts then as Exec Producer?

Well I always thought Kieran was good when he was producer so one can only assume it's Steve doing all the hands-on work, with Kieran overseeing things and giving it his stamp of approval. I don't think any of us believe he's there everyday, working alongside Steve - especially since he's the controller of drama at ITV Productions in Manchester so he's got other things to worry about as well.

I agree the Friday double has certainly brought with it the repetitive plots and scenes and storylines with little development, but there have been other issues affecting the show since early last year. The introduction of weak, two dimensional characters, the poor structuring of storylines, the terrible execution of dramatic plots and we even had this issue of one storyline dominating and going nowhere with Ashley, Claire and Casey last year. And it's all down to Steve who really has proved he is not capable of running a massive show like Coronation Street that really needs a lot of care and attention. If you don't have a passion for the show then you might as well not bother. As far as I can tell, he simply sees it as a 'job' and when he leaves he'll just be leaving another job and moving on to a new job.

The show really needs somebody who is absolutely in love with the show and wants to make sure it is at its very best. Currently, Corrie is rife with continuity errors, plot holes, contrived situations and improbable plot devices. It's just a mess in all honesty. IMO.

For all we know Steve may not have the freedom to make decisions without Kieran overseeing? The blame cannot be laid entirely at Steve's door. Controller of ITV drama in Manchester? What other drama apart from Corrie is made in Manchester - the only other I can think of is The Street which ITV make for BBC. Most other ITV drama is made at Yorkshire or in London

Steve Frost did an excellent job at Emmerdale. The producer who took over from Steve made so many characters unlikeable.

I agree that someone who is "in love with the show" would need to be producer but the majority of fans like myself dont have experience producing tv shows so wouldnt stand a chance, as much as we'd like the job! Wink And as you know I absolutely love Coronation Street.

Hopefully the new executive producer will give it a boost - but Corrie is still suffering from that exodus of the likes of Tony Wood, Brian Kirkwood and Daran Little over to Hollyoaks.

There's been many high profile coups in recent times of TV talent, but I think that has been one of the most successful for C4 and one of the most damaging for ITV.

I'd not picked up on their loss - but it really does help to explain how the very escence of Corrie is getting so watered down and damaged.

Bring in Daran Little as Producer - I'm sure he'd put it on track again (at least in terms of Corrie's spirit.

The trouble is that Corrie is little more than a "brand" to ITV - not the "institution" that it was always said to be.

Last night's episodes were marginally better - but there was still some mention of the Ryan/Alex stuff - and it's not going to end from what I've read in spoilers.

Well don't think it's been mentioned here - probably as it originated in the Daily Star I think - but the rumours of launching a chain of Rovers Return pubs certainly back up that claim.

I just think it needs someone who has a passion for Coronation Street or at the very least, for quality continuing drama. The show is really missing the team who moved to Hollyoaks, and it's clearly lost most of its best writers. The current writing team are not up to scratch at all.

Wouldn't something like that fall foul of the "product placement" rules? Ofcom surely would have to act (assuming they located and fitted their removeable backbone in time to have an effect).

It's one thing selling cheap tat and memorabilia at the former 'Granada Studios Tour', quite another having a chain of pubs trading off something in a TV programme.

Exactly, but I think the rules on that are likely to be relaxed - but that said, this would be a pretty extreme form. I don't think even America would let Friends have loads of "Central Perks" across the country.

And I'd imagine soaps would still come under further restrictions too, like there is now which prohibits soap stars from appearing in adverts.

Talking about product placement, many times I have seen Sainsbury's products on screen, ie orange juice cartons & the cleaning materials Kirk had in his box on Mon, The Sainsbury logo is always obscured by other objects though.

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think that's an official Ofcom rule. I think it's just a contractual thing the producers insist on. Otherwise the Leerdammer Cheese ads would have had to have been pulled as soon as Becky started in Corrie.
