Though some would argue that Casualty and Holby are both steps up the soap ladder from Corrie and EastEnders - though it depends on the character you play and the storylines they get.
I think the UK drama industry is relatively small in some respects, and the long-running dramas that have fast turnarounds (EastEnders, Casualty, The Bill, Holby City, Coronation Street, Emmerdale) all value actors who can act AND have the stamina to work to tight deadlines. An amazing performance that takes 10 takes may not be deemed better than a very good one that happens first time...
Georgia Taylor, who used to play Toyah Battersby in Corrie, has just had a great storyline in Casualty for example.

It seems to be a trend with many of the actors thesedays. All those who have been around for say 10 years stay loyal and end up staying forever, all those who are newer stick around for a few years before deciding to leave. We'll never get a new Ken Barlow ever again
They never get a better role than what they had in Corrie and end up in Holby City anyway
