It seems to be a trend with many of the actors thesedays. All those who have been around for say 10 years stay loyal and end up staying forever, all those who are newer stick around for a few years before deciding to leave. We'll never get a new Ken Barlow ever again

They never get a better role than what they had in Corrie and end up in Holby City anyway

Though some would argue that Casualty and Holby are both steps up the soap ladder from Corrie and EastEnders - though it depends on the character you play and the storylines they get.

I think the UK drama industry is relatively small in some respects, and the long-running dramas that have fast turnarounds (EastEnders, Casualty, The Bill, Holby City, Coronation Street, Emmerdale) all value actors who can act AND have the stamina to work to tight deadlines. An amazing performance that takes 10 takes may not be deemed better than a very good one that happens first time...

Georgia Taylor, who used to play Toyah Battersby in Corrie, has just had a great storyline in Casualty for example.

More bad news for the Street. If only the Mortons and the Bookies would quit.

I think this would've worked better than expecting viewers to swallow a "swapped at birth" plot - I feel they are insulting my intelligence!

Interesting idea there but from what has been said in the script its unlikely Dean would have slept with someone else. They do seem to be making out he was some kind of saint, killed in a car crash by evil Paul who blamed him for the crash.

I wonder just how unrealistic a swapped at birth storyline is though?

Dean sleeping with someone else is FAR more likely than a hospital mixing up babies - and toppling him from his Sainthood would have been far more realistic and also devestating for Michelle.

Because I just don't believe the baby swap thing, I've been finding Corrie a real struggle to watch, lots of lost credibility.

If anyone can find an example of a swapped baby since 1990 in the UK I might be prepared to accept the whole damn storyline.

Why is it that we always lose pretty decent characters but are still stuck with the Mortons and Sean. Rolling Eyes

Ever thought the reason so many quit Corrie and Emmerdale these days is the workload? Filming 5 or 6 episodes a week not forgetting learning the lines in the first place must take it out of them. They are paid very well so that must be the reason so many quit after a few years.

The likes of Ken Barlow, Rita, Betty and Emily will stay until they are unable to carry on due to ill health (like Liz Dawn) because they only have a small number of scenes so arent there half the time. Granted Ken Barlow had a big storyline with Tracy and then Denise but hasnt done much since last May.

Also if we are looking for a modern day Ken Barlow we have Kevin who has been there 25 years this year, Steve who has been there almost 20 years, Ashley and Tyrone who has been there around 10 years. Some stay a long time but most quit after less than 5 years.

Fair point, although this would have happened in early 1992 as Ryan has just had his 16th birthday so its not long after 1990.

As for Dean, well the writing has been so good that they have made me feel sorry for a character we have never met, and indeed died 7 years ago (according to the scripts). The way Michelle speaks of him I think its unlikely (although not impossible) that he would have cheated on her, and its more original than the usual "finding out my hubby got another woman pregnant" storyline.

Anyway, the Vera tribute was good - nice to see her very first appearance in 1974 included, and it was very moving at the end with Bill Tarmey.

Does anyone know if the Farewell Vera programme will be repeated at all - I'd set it to record on Sky+, but we had a power cut!!!

Thanks
