I've not been on here since Friday, so sorry this post comes a bit late...
But Friday's episodes really demonstrate Corrie at its very best. I'm so pleased they chose a peaceful death for Vera.
The scenes in which Jack discovered she'd died were some of the most tender and emotional I've ever seen in Corrie - something which wouldn't have been the case had she met her end bouncing off the bonnet of a speeding car or blown up in a gas explosion. It's also a situation to which a lot of viewers will relate.
I was reminded very much of the classic scene in which Hilda broke down in tears looking at Stan's glasses case.
I completely agree with ohwhatanight's comments that it's this kind of pure, human emotion which stand out so much more than big-budget, dramatic explosions, murders and disasters.
Excellent work and beautifully done. Well done Corrie. These episodes will surely win awards.
I agree with everything you said there Spencer For Hire. It is nice to have a death that isnt dramatic like so many others have been in the last few years.
I think Vera's words were "You'll have to stay in with me in Blackpool as i'll be the only 1 you'll know" or words to that effect. To which Jack replied "Dont remind me!"
I hear the actor who plays Terry is journalist now. That could explain his ever expanding waistband.
He is now a reporter for the Manchester Evening News!!!!
He had to ask permission to film the scenes (just as much in the samw way that the actor who played Ray Langton had to ask his Vegas real estate bosses for a few months off to film the characters final storyline!!)
I agree about the father and son - they have to be two of the most boring pointless characters. Their scenes were just a filler in last nights episodes.
About the Ryan storyline - its not as if they could just say "your mum isnt really your mum, lets just forget all about it".
I agree the Mason's don't really work together, they don't come across like father and son, that scene in the flat was so daft because they were talking about sex yet the couldn't actually say 'having sex' due to the time the programme is on.
and what was with Dan serving his tea twice, in the first scene he is serving up the meal and sit and eats some whilst talking then in the next scene he is returning from the kitchen with a can of Acme beer and another plate full of food which he sit down with and starts eating again
If I were one of the under-used actors in Corrie, I'd be pig sick of all the new weak characters flooding into the street.
I'd have a clear out and axe the OTT Kelly, all the Mortons, Dev, the "father" of the bookies (give the son a chance for now) and Violet's sister.
Then grow in one or two new characters - not parachute them in in a contrived way:
Sunita could come back and take over the shop from Dev - there could be a storyline where they get close again but inevitably all goes wrong and he decides to concentrate on his other shops (that don't ever get a mention these days). In time she could then get a new bloke to play her character against. They got rid of the wrong character.
I like Vici - I'm sure she'd have a hunky brother who could come and give Kev and Tyrone a hand in the garage... then her role could grow more too.
Otherwise stop resting characters for so long or giving them filler scenes (Leanne, Ken & Deidrie, Ashley & Cluur, Emily, Rita, Janice & her bloke, Bill & Audrey, Eileen, Kirk...). Then stop over-using characters like Steve McDonald, the Conors and the Platts. More balance.
I'd like to see more "comedy double act" banter between Ashley & Kirk in the butchers, a few "laddy" scenes in the garage (to balance the bitchy scenes in the factory), some more of Gail at work, some more scenes with Bill & Audrey at home, some comedy scenes with Paul & Leanne in the restaurant....
I feel there's so much undeveloped potential in characters and situations and too much reliance on "cliffhanger" scenes, issue-like storylines and bringing in flat-pack 2D characters to tick boxes in the "How to Populate a Soap with its Characters Handbook"...
I read Rosie's going back to the factory - why? Couldn't the Street have 1 teen who decides to stay on at school to do A'Levels and go to college instead of dropping out? I really hope that'll be Chesney - I'd love to see him with getting his degree scroll in a few years time - with Cilla turning up, all dolled up, and embarrasing him!
There's scope for a student household - would add another dimention to the Street and wind up Norris!
