They've been in dire need of a cast cull for a good couple of years now.
They had a cast cull when Steve Frost took over - several characters went including Nathan, Diggory, Keith, Bev, Scooter.
The cast I dislike and would like to see axed are Kelly, Les, Cilla, Jamie, Jodie, Kayleigh and Grandad Morten. Almost half of them are going/gone anyway.

I think there a few more. All the Morton's need to be scrapped IMO, maybe apart from Jodie and Mel but the rest of them are useless. I don't think ditching four characters is the same as a 'cast cull'. Vernon needs to be dropped, as does Ashley, Dev, Kirk, Sean, Chesney, Kelly, Lloyd, Ryan Connor (or at least a re-cast because he's an awful actor). They're the ones who I would drop then I'd set about focusing on characters such as Violet who have been shamelessly sidelined or handed awful storylines like the one we'll be seeing tonight.

Vernon - I forgot about him, yes fair enough he can go.
Sean - far too overused but im not sure whether he should be axed. He's ok in small doses although I dont particularly like him.
Kelly should go. The others you mentioned I dont agree need axing, especially Kirk - why get rid of him?
Ryan is awful I agree - and scenes with Kym Ryder and Alison King only highlights how crap he is. But the character could prove interesting as he comes to terms with his uncle's death, and he is bound to find out what happened to Dean sooner or later.
I dont think the storyline with Violet is awful at all - she lost a baby which was tragic and she is trying dealing with her loss.

If I were producer I would sort the show out.
I would write out Jack and Vera (with a wonderful happy exit storyline), Liz, Tyrone, Dev, Amber, Kirk, Bethany, Fiz, Chesney, Kelly, Yana, Janice, Lloyd, Molly, Vernon, Roger, Wilfred Morton, Derek, Jerry, Darryl and Kayleigh. They would join departing Sarah, Cilla, Joanne, Les and Jamie to make 27 cast axings. I'd get rid of the lot of them in 6 months flat.
The Rovers would get a slight makeover retaining its core themes and cosiness, and a new owner would take over. I'd give big - and actually good - storylines to Violet and Becky, plus something longer term for both Rita and Emily. I'd have Gail cart David Platt off to a 'Brat Camp'-esque place for a while, to come back (still played by Jack P Shepherd) with a new look, older and more mature and a proper 'ladies man' on the Street. Jack and Vera's exit storyline would culminate in a tearful farewell in the Rovers from all as they leave the Street forever to live in the country.
Oh well that's just me being bored but I wholeheartedly want all of those 27 gone now. I would not write in a further 27 to compensate. With a smaller cast the storylines can focus more on the cast we have so we know them better.

But Violet never came across as somebody whop particularly wanted kids - her original pregnancy was an accident. I think a better storyline would be the writers exploring her history - we know very little about her. I think it's a waste of an opportunity personally and we'll continue watching a character whom we know nothing about. Sad.
Sean was good until he became a victim of overexposure. A terrible actor who plays himself but is undeniably popular and so I can see why he's featured a lot, but he's awful and I'd drop him like a hat or at least scale back his screen time. A complete and utter gay stereotype who has very little substance. He wouldn't be able to pull off a serious storyline to save his life.
Kirk is poor - another bad actor who plays a boring, bland character whom I have absolutely no connection with. I feel nothing for the character which is why his latest storyline bored me to tears. He's pointless.
As for Ryan - I can't see the actor improving. They've recast children before and so I don't see the problem here. I wouldn't really like to drop the character because it would be difficult but if he is going to be given more screentime then they need an actor who can pull it off. Like I say, I think the Connor's have been the best thing about Steve Frost's reign, especially Michelle and Carla who have the potential to remain on the street for years to come.

Yet again people are only focusing on numbers and not on the actual storylines and family structures on the show
You'd have the Rovers change hands, and by a new character who would be disliked, half the houses empty, the other half without 2.4 children or any sensible family unit. It's very Brookside when you get families leaving and one staying on, living in a family sized home. It also makes for good character based stuff when you have multiple generations of the same family, particularly in the platts
People forget that the cast is much older than say Hollyoaks, and whereas those young people would probably work 24 hours a day and appear in every episode, there are dozens of characters in Corrie who have reached the stage in their careers where they expect long holidays and a lighter schedule. You aren't going to get any more Rita, Emily, Ken, Gail etc however many you axe
Plus you'd end up seeing those characters you don't like much more often!

And you think you'd do a better job than Steve Frost as producer do you?
You say you'd give long term storylines to certain characters but what storylines exactly?
Axe half the cast and you would have to reduce the number of episodes as there would be too much work for a cast of say 30 at 5 episodes a week. And the likes of Barbara would probabaly be horrified at all the extra work and quit!
No but she lost a baby, regardless of whether she got pregnant by accident or not, so her feelings on the matter have clearly changed.
Not all characters have to have baggage when they arrive.
As for Ryan Connor - I agree, recast is probabaly the best thing.

Teletext is reporting that sacked Corrie star Bruce Jones is to write a no holds barred book about his time on the show.
If its anything like Lynne Perrie's book it should be worth a read!

I can't seem them getting rid of Emily and Noris (one of the best characters IMO)! Jack and Vera possibly, if Liz Dawn's health deteriorates further-- you can't have Jack without Vera (or vice versa).
Please get rid of Dev by all means, I think the only useful purpose he has is to act as guardian for the promising Amber.

God, this is in danger of turning into the EastEnders thread!
I won't be disapointed to see Steve Frost go - I believe that bit is true, but don't believe the axe list at all, and I'd rather watch EastEnders than have bloody Reg back.
