I saw How Soaps Changed the World on Channel 4 tonight, nice to see old clips, with Elsie Tanner and Ena Sharples in 1980, and Martha's death in 1964, fights etc. etc.

BTW If any of you missed the 1967 episode of Coronation Street on BBC Four, it is being repeated tommorow (Sunday 18th) at 7pm.

Thanks for highlighting the 1967 episode. It's a shame they didn't show the old adverts in the middle as I understand they did a few weeks ago - does anyone have a copy with the ads I could see?

It would have been good to see an episode actually set in the Street, but there were some great lines in it - there were clearly elements in the writing still there today and it's what makes Corrie the best!

Are there any plans to release the old B&W episodes on DVD? They could probably do a box set of 4 DVDs for each year (until it went 3 nights a week). Any one know if they've thought about it?

Yeah cheers for the tip too, I caught all of it this time. The reason why they edited the adverts was last time it was shown, it was shown as part of the 1960's season, but this time round it was shown as part of a Jack Rosenthal night as a tribute to him as he directed many episodes of Corrie. Though it was nice to see it in full 4:3 and no DOG either!

(Though what was that programme about with Maureen Lipman after old Corrie? I saw the end of it and I was confused what it was about, weirdly it was made by Central for ITV)

Though back to basics, I liked tonight's episode. Though I thought it was quite funny when they were saying 'How's Mavis?' as she was in Where The Heart is after it, as is Tricky Dicky.

Coronation Street is great at present. I love the mix of everyday humour (Vera & Frankie & Les, Janice & Cilla etc ) aswell as powerful storylines (Sunita). What does everybody else think?

Doesn't Maria still work at Audrey's Salon as well? If so, why is she not included in this issue of taking Sarah on? Even if she has gone on holiday it would still be an issue would it not?

When Sarah volunteered for the job, Audrey mentioned she didn't need any staff. Sarah dropped the bombshell that Maria is planning to leave soon anyway.

Not that I follow it, you understand Wink

Might as well drop these in here:

Sam Aston aka Chesney Brown in Corrie is up for best newcomer (as is Patsy Kensit in Emmerdale) in the National Television Awards. Viewers will draw up a shortlist for each award, using forms from post offices or by voting online via ITV's website at http://www.itv.com/page.asp?partid=1800 FYI. Nominations will be announced in the autumn and the awards ceremony is on October 26.

Elsewhere, today's Mirror newspaper reveals that Chesney Brown is to be left home alone for a period of time while Cilla and Les go for a "dirty weekend". Terrified and hungry, Ches could be forced to live off dog food. It's been described as an upsetting plotline for viewers who apparently "love him [Chesney/Sam Aston] to bits".

Thanks for that update Gavin. I still don't see why Audrey was concerned about Candice's position there if she knew she could train Sarah up to replace Maria?

It was Candice who was thought to want to leave wasn't it as she only gets to do sweeping up.

Talking about staffing arrangements, I would like to know who was serving at Roy's Rolls during Monday's first episode. Vera was busy being Frankie's 'PA'!!

Candice, Maria; they all blend in to one sometimes. Apologies for the error.

i think voting for corrie in the NTA will be a waste of time as the awards almost always go to EE.

I think Maria left the salon when she thought she was moving to Nottingham with Nick. Her absence was explained in last nights episode when Audrey said she was ill.

Whats on TV have had a Corrie cover 2 weeks running, this week they have Cilla and Chesney.
