It's been rather average so far tonight. The golf was a good opportunity for some good comedy but it's kind of fallen flat thanks mainly to Dev. Steve has just about saved it.

Liked the scene with Roy in Jerry's Fast Food though.

Really enjoyed both of tonights episodes. Vicky Entwistle was excellent as Janice IMO in the scenes where she found out what Leanne's real job was and the later scene at the flat.

Liked the scenes with Paul, Steve and Dev too - it was good to see Dev and Steve get one over on Paul.

Wasnt too keen on the earlier scenes with the new family and all the stuff around the pink/red sign, but the later scenes with everyone in the takeaway were ok, but its probabaly far too early to form any kind of opinion on the new characters yet Wink

You can form an opinion now, except strangely the Grandad wasn't even on, anyone think he will have a storyline of dieing sometime in the next 6 months?

Well the 2 girls haven't really done anything yet

The lad seems to be ok and will no doubt be good with David. He was on Calendar the other week, apparantly he comes from West Yorkshire Very Happy

Jerry is interesting, the scene with the pink sign may be a sign of a future character trait, he'll probably turn out exactly like Sinbad though

Anyway, I thought they were supposed to be like the Battersbys?

Thanks.

Generally, I like them. Jerry and Jodie are my favourites. Kayleigh is slightly wooden and doesn't yet quite match up to the other young actors on the show like Sophie but she's only had a few episodes so she may improve. The twins are also good - and although she hasn't featured much I quite like Mel more out of the two. She seems quite different to the young female characters we tend get on the street these days - a bit like Violet. Just hope she doesn't get sidelined like Violet.

I enjoyed the second episode more tonight. Vicky Entwistle acted her socks off. I was saying last night that I haven't like her much recently but she completely turned my opinion of her around tonight. I hope the writers give Janice more material like this to work with because when she's given drama it's definitely the character at its best.

Jane Danson was also faultless tonight, as usual.

And in real life is the long-standing best friend of Jack P Shepherd.

Fair enough. It was just a minor point and I do agree that we need to have characters who don't just live on the street. But I'm just looking at different ways in which the cast could be scaled down - because it does need to be scaled down. We have a cast that is so large and like I said we have characters who we know virtually nothing about.

You're missing the point I made I think... the reason these characters are not developed, is because a relatively small number of characters are allowed to dominate, ironic considering there are so many characters.

For example, why are Vernon and Dev getting all the comedy storylines of late? There are plenty of other comedy characters they could use and develop more-- Tyrone and Molly for instance.

Violet has not been allowed to develop, because the characters in her environs have been allowed to hog the lime light. That's why we feel we don't "know" such characters; not because they are superfluous, but they haven't been given a fair chance. It's all been about the Connors and Barlows of late, little else.

I would argue that having all these characters ought to add variety. As I said before, the characters should be kept on their usefulness/popularity-- rather than sticking to a quota.

The workload should be spread more evenly between characters, to allow characters like Violet to develop more.

I do understand what you mean. I don't think it's as noticeable in say Emmerdale which also has a large cast because apart from The Kings, there doesn't seem to be certain characters dominating the storylines week in week out. We've seen more of The Connors these past few weeks than say The Webster's. That doesn't mean I want The Webster's to be dropped because they haven't been featured for a while.

I don't think I was as clear as I should be. Obviously we shouldn't get rid of cast members that we rarely see for the sake of having a smaller cast - but there are characters that are either badly written or badly acted and some are superfluous like Adam and therefore Corrie would do well to drop them. Once they're gone, they could then focus on - like you said - spreading storylines out more evenly so that we see more of characters like Violet and find out more about her.

Fair enough, I agree with that.

Regarding the characters that don't appear that often: The ones that ought to be axed are the ones that have no function or don't contribute anything when they do appear.

Adam is a brilliant example of this. What does he contribute when he makes his monthly appearance? A clever remark or two to Blanche or Tracey-luv? That about it as far as I can see.

Compare Adam with Jack and Vera; they always contribute an amusing storyline when they appear-- which is sadly infrequently these days (due to illness AFAIK).

jack and vera's absence is more due to their age and health than script writing. some clever filming last night with the final scenes of Janice and Leanne inside the takeaway filmed through the window.

I'm waiting for Jerry to make a joke about chips with everything, the name of the takeaway sinbad worked in on brookside. Michael Stark is also back in The Royal this week so his character must be leave that series

Jack and Vera aren't seen much as I think they had/have health problems and also because of their age. Adam, is a pointless character and should be axed.

I totally agree about Vicky Entwistle - ive always quite liked the character of Janice so I didnt mind when Steve Frost saved her from the axe. She is a lot better than Cilla. I do prefer Janice on her own though rather than with Les.

I agree about Jane Danson as well, she is an excellent actress.

Yes both William Tarmey and Liz Dawn have health problems, especially Liz Dawn I think so its understandable they dont do many scenes. Same with Betty who is 87 this year.

I hope they do a big storyline for the Duckworths golden wedding anniversary which is this year. According to Corrie.net both 18 April or 19 August have been mentioned in the script over the year as they date they got married.

I remember reading somewhere that they are planning on doing

Another thing I meant to mention the other week, I wish they'd make new or at least update the current Coronation Street Family Albums

They repeated the Barlows one a week last Sunday and the story finished at 2004!
