I'm looking forward to the scenario between Leanne, Nick and Maria, it should be good! Oh... and to any of you 1960's/1970's Corrie fans out there (like me. Ahem), legendary character Ena Sharples who moved away after twenty years in 1980 will be mentioned on Friday. Yay!

Really? Where did you hear that? Wonder who mentions her? Goodness, Ena left the show in April 1980 over a year before I was born Shocked Although I think she actually stopped being a regular character early in the 1970s due to ill health.

Its nice when they mention characters that are long gone, it was nice when Sal and Kev mentioned Hilda a while back, and Ken mentioned Uncle Albert. It would be nice for Gail to mention Elsie Tanner.

Last nights episodes were good, great acting from Tina O Brien, they were also very sad indeed, its always upsetting when its the death of a child or baby. Crying or Very sad

Yeah, the episodes were fab. I found the info on Ena from www.corrie.net. In the Corrie Christmas mag, it says that Ena left in 1973, but returned for visits. This is untrue, as Violet Carson (Ena) dropped out of the show in 1973 to recover following a breakdown and overwork, and stayed out for nine months. During Miss Carson's occasional time off during 1973-1980, it was written in that Ena had been visiting good friend Henry Foster, who made her his housekeeper in 1980, and Ena left the Street for good. In reality though, Violet Carson was suffering ill health and was written out in 1980 when she had severe high blood pressure. One thing I have noted is that these old characters (Ena, Elsie, Annie etc.) have not died, so in the Street they'd be 100 years old now! In the 1985 "Jubilee" video, Ken mentions that Ena died in 1983. Untrue - Miss Carson did, it was never said that Ena died, and in Daran Little's books and many other Corrie author's books, Ena is still alive and kicking, even at 105 1/2 years old! Shocked

The Ena mention comes about after Norris and Betty talk about "ghostly sightings"... apparantly, I've read somewhere else that this will become a big thing, with many residents seeing other residents that have died or left some time ago...

EDIT: BTW I bought Ena's last ep from Granada, it is the episode broadcast on 2 April 1980, with Albert unhappy that Ena is lodging with him and nags at Ken.

Thanks for the info about Ena, yes it was in the Corrie mag I got the info from she quit the show in 73, although ive seen all the eps since 76 on Plus and I dont remember her being in it very often. I remember the episode she last appeared in from the Plus airings. In Daran Little's 40th book it says this about Ena's 1980 departure;

Quote:

"What should have been the biggest news of the year passed without comment. Since the early 70s Violet Carson's health had deteriorated and her appearances as Ena Sharples had become scarse, with months seperating them. When in March (1980) she recorded scenes in which Ena said she was going to stay in St Anne', the writers, cast and viewers all expected to see the famous hairnet again, unfortunately they didnt. All stories plotted to bring Ena back to the Street had to be shelved as Violet was simply to ill to appear"

Patricia Phoenix also quit the show in 1983, her final episode was shown in January 1984 - there were rumours she quit under protest due to the sacking of Peter Adamson (Len Fairclough) but maybe she had just had enough after 23 years. According to Daran's book the TV Times wrote this following Pat's death "Only when Miss Phoenix left the series did the BBC dare launch its rival series Eastenders"

Although Ena and Annie's deaths were never mentioned on screen presumabely the script writers would have us believe they are dead now although its quite possible for them both to be alive, but Ena did have health problems back in the 70s so I think its unlikely? I heard that Elsie did die but off screen in 1987 I think.

Yeah, it may by possible that they are dead, but how someone be sure? Daran Little, the "expert", has never wrote down that Ena, Elsie etc. have died. In their profiles on the Corrie.net website and on the Women of Coronation Street book, they are currently living. Same goes in other Corrie books by other people. So, according to all the research I've done, (between 2002 and still on going) the actresses died, but the characters remain alive. What's funny is that when Vi Carson returned (yes!) later in 1980 for the TV Times celebration magazine, but not on-screen (aww....), the magazine noted down all events of things that had happened, but didn't state that Ena left. They really should have done, come to think of it, because it was released in July, but I've heard that it was updated and released AGAIN in 1981 in September, and I've got that version. The only thing that is different is a few more added pictures and more things added on the timeline, e.g. Ken + Deirdre, Emily marries Arnold Swain etc.

SPOILER ALERT
(Highlight from the arrow onwards)

From Digital Spy...

Arrow Coronation Street character Sunita Parekh (Shobna Gulati) will be diagnosed with a brain tumour as part of an upcoming storyline, the Mirror reports today.

Her problems start as bad headaches but she is adamant that they are only migraines. Unconvinced, corner shop boss Dev Alahan pays for Sunita to go for a private check-up. After the check-up, the brain scan shows she has a life threatening brain tumour and aneurysm, which needs urgent surgery.

A Corrie insider told the paper: "She tells Dev, 'If the aneurysm doesn't kill me the operation probably will'."

Things go from bad to worse for the corner shop as this week Dev finds out he has cancer after his routine check-up. Sunita's suffering will be aired later in the year.

That is just too depressing, sounds more like forthcoming EastEnders plots...

It also seems a bit much considering Arrow Dev's cancer scare. (highlight again to view) What next, Norris gets a strangulated haemorroid?

More ghosts? Can I sue? I did a story 14 years ago and when I wrote to Barbara Knox to ask for a signed photo for a now former Hungarian friend, I told her about that. There was Ena, Elsie, Len, Ernie and even Alan Bradley out for revenge from beyond the grave. Never mind Vera Lomax's ghost. We want Alan and Richard!

Regarding Pat Phoenix, her housekeeper said in an interview the real reason Pat quit was because she knew then she had cancer. Peter Adamson after all was sacked months before she did it. She would have gone at that time out of protest. Elsie, according to the tribute video released in 1987, died. Linda Cheveski came to the street and was reminiscing with Emily and Mike who both said they were sorry to hear about Elsie's death. Yet after that she was said to be alive and well! Sorry, but I'd rather go by the vid than any of Daran's books (especially the 40th one which was full of mistakes like Curly's birthday and the date Pat Phoenix died which were all correct in the 35th one).

Yes, I knew I had heard about Elsie dying, thanks for mentioning that Rita Littlewood.

Didnt Patricia Phoenix also refuse to attend the filming of Len and Rita's wedding, as a protest because she didnt believe Len would ever marry anyone other than Elsie?

I've heard various things about Pat Phoenix + the Fairclough wedding, one being that she was too ill, the other one is the one you mention above.

Loved tonights ep! Especially the bit about Mrs Sharples and Vera Lomax:

Norris: Vera, you say? And was this Mrs Sharples daughter? Hmm. Vera Lomax. Ooohh! I got a cold shiver! Wait.. Vera Lomax... ooh! Again!

The main rumour is the one about not believing Rita and Len should be together. Although she messed things up a bit by being there for the TV Times photo shoot!

As i remember it Elsie did go to the wedding of Len and Rita back in 1977 and Annie Walker made a classic comment to Elsie about her outfit saying something like yes i have always liked that outfit my dear especially when you wore it to etc etc etc !!! Razz And i also think that the guy Elsie went to Portugal with in 1984 was also at the wedding .

I have the wedding of Len Fairclough and Rita Littlewood on the 1977 video, and Elsie did attend the reception but not the actual service.

Bill Gregory wasnt at the wedding, Elsie hadnt seen him for 14 years when he took her away to Portugal in 1984.

MASSIVE AND SHOCKING SPOILER
Huge storyline

Highlight to view:
Coronation Street favourite, Mike Baldwin, will find himself in the centre of a shocking "whodunnit?" storyline this Autumn when he is stabbed and left for dead outside his flat in Weatherfield.

Baldwin, played by Johnny Briggs, will gather several enemies over the coming months and all of them will be suspects in his attempted murder. It begins when he accidentally runs over and kills Nick Tilsley (Adam Rickett), who runs out onto the cobbles to try and stop his ex-wife Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) from leaving. Nick's younger brother David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) goes off the rails and vows revenge when Mike is released without charge, and the 13 year old subsequently becomes prime suspect in the stabbing.

Other suspects include butcher Fred Elliott (John Savident) who loses yet another lover to rat Baldwin and psycho solictor Maya Sharma (Sasha Behar) who discovers a dodgy deal between factory owner Mike and her ex-lover Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) has left her penniless.

Super bitch Karen McDonald (Suranne Jones) becomes a suspect when she is sacked from Underworld and discovers husband Steve (Simon Gregson) has slept with glamourous Frankie Baldwin (Debra Stephenson). This sparks the beginning of the end for Karen as she flies off the rails after losing her job and husband due to Frankie's meddling, and she promises to exact revenge on the Baldwins in any way possible.

Producers claim the storyline will run for months and the fate of many characters will become apparent as Weatherfield becomes a bloodbath before a shocking climax for Christmas.

Coronation Street has fast become the nations most watched soap, raking in more than 12 million viewers per episode, and that number is set to rise at the show goes from strength to strength this year.
