Unfortunately I managed to miss both episodes last night due to getting drunk at a friend's barbecue. Sad

Does anyone know why ITV2's repeats of Corrie are a couple of days behind? Today they're showing Sunday's episode, and I can't catch up on Monday's until Wednesday and Thursday, which is a fat lot of good if I want to catch up before Wednesday's ITV1 episode. Evil or Very Mad

Seem's that all the extra episodes were to make up for the lack of episodes during Euro 2004. Only 2 episodes next week (1 x 45 min, 1x30 min) both opposite Big Brother.

So there's been so many episodes lately, the repeats will have to catch up!

On the first point, going out and getting drunk with friends is infinately better than a night in watching telly, and I say that as a corrie fan too. In fact I did the same thing and had a great time. *thump thump* - says my head.

Corrie repeats were pushed back becuase of Hell's Kitchen I expect.

Get a bank tape and set up your video, then you can watch them in order.

And please don't use this " Evil or Very Mad ". Ryan Pannel used to use that all the time and it reminds me of him. *sniff*.

I'm pretty certain they've been like that for a long time tho.

Damn, I wish I had enough money to afford Sky+, and pardon my ignorance, but I don't remember Ryan Pannel. Are there any other emoticons you'd like me to avoid? Wink Wink

PS. Have an Anadin on me!

I thought the announcer at the end of the first episode, and that irritating Cadbury sponsor credit before the start of the second episode, were tactless and unnecessary given the mood of the two episodes last night.

In the days of the Cadbury chocolate people when it was a serious episode (for example, when Jake Webster died), the sponsor credit was silent and understated. Is there not an alternative sponsor credit film that can be shown around episodes that are more dramatic or deal with sensitive issues?

Excellent acting last night I thought, especially Tina O'Brien, when she started crying at Billy's graveside it got me crying as well.

I'm looking forward to the scenario between Leanne, Nick and Maria, it should be good! Oh... and to any of you 1960's/1970's Corrie fans out there (like me. Ahem), legendary character Ena Sharples who moved away after twenty years in 1980 will be mentioned on Friday. Yay!

Really? Where did you hear that? Wonder who mentions her? Goodness, Ena left the show in April 1980 over a year before I was born Shocked Although I think she actually stopped being a regular character early in the 1970s due to ill health.

Its nice when they mention characters that are long gone, it was nice when Sal and Kev mentioned Hilda a while back, and Ken mentioned Uncle Albert. It would be nice for Gail to mention Elsie Tanner.

Last nights episodes were good, great acting from Tina O Brien, they were also very sad indeed, its always upsetting when its the death of a child or baby. Crying or Very sad

We know its not real, but it was a sensative issue and many people watching had probabaly gone through the same thing so they should have used a more appropriate sponser as a mark of respect.

Yeah, the episodes were fab. I found the info on Ena from www.corrie.net. In the Corrie Christmas mag, it says that Ena left in 1973, but returned for visits. This is untrue, as Violet Carson (Ena) dropped out of the show in 1973 to recover following a breakdown and overwork, and stayed out for nine months. During Miss Carson's occasional time off during 1973-1980, it was written in that Ena had been visiting good friend Henry Foster, who made her his housekeeper in 1980, and Ena left the Street for good. In reality though, Violet Carson was suffering ill health and was written out in 1980 when she had severe high blood pressure. One thing I have noted is that these old characters (Ena, Elsie, Annie etc.) have not died, so in the Street they'd be 100 years old now! In the 1985 "Jubilee" video, Ken mentions that Ena died in 1983. Untrue - Miss Carson did, it was never said that Ena died, and in Daran Little's books and many other Corrie author's books, Ena is still alive and kicking, even at 105 1/2 years old! Shocked

The Ena mention comes about after Norris and Betty talk about "ghostly sightings"... apparantly, I've read somewhere else that this will become a big thing, with many residents seeing other residents that have died or left some time ago...

EDIT: BTW I bought Ena's last ep from Granada, it is the episode broadcast on 2 April 1980, with Albert unhappy that Ena is lodging with him and nags at Ken.

That reminds me of that time when Vera was convinced she saw Ivy's ghost, that being very funny. (That did happen didn't it?)

Yeah, it did happen, and I seem to remember Jack wearing this "Rovers Return - Come taste our Spirits! , with Vera appalled at him poking fun at her best friend, and her throwing a pint over him Laughing

Get it, spirits?

Thanks for the info about Ena, yes it was in the Corrie mag I got the info from she quit the show in 73, although ive seen all the eps since 76 on Plus and I dont remember her being in it very often. I remember the episode she last appeared in from the Plus airings. In Daran Little's 40th book it says this about Ena's 1980 departure;

Quote:

"What should have been the biggest news of the year passed without comment. Since the early 70s Violet Carson's health had deteriorated and her appearances as Ena Sharples had become scarse, with months seperating them. When in March (1980) she recorded scenes in which Ena said she was going to stay in St Anne', the writers, cast and viewers all expected to see the famous hairnet again, unfortunately they didnt. All stories plotted to bring Ena back to the Street had to be shelved as Violet was simply to ill to appear"

Patricia Phoenix also quit the show in 1983, her final episode was shown in January 1984 - there were rumours she quit under protest due to the sacking of Peter Adamson (Len Fairclough) but maybe she had just had enough after 23 years. According to Daran's book the TV Times wrote this following Pat's death "Only when Miss Phoenix left the series did the BBC dare launch its rival series Eastenders"

Although Ena and Annie's deaths were never mentioned on screen presumabely the script writers would have us believe they are dead now although its quite possible for them both to be alive, but Ena did have health problems back in the 70s so I think its unlikely? I heard that Elsie did die but off screen in 1987 I think.
