I’ve been sorting through some old videotapes and came across a few Corrie episodes from the mid-90s – not a very good era it seems! In fact I’d forgotten what a rough patch the show went through! What it highlighted though was a number of “strategic blunders” that the following producers ended up undoing. It leads me to think about other plot or character blunders over the years:
1) Jack & Vera take over the Rovers:
This should never have happened. I think it put an end to their golden years on the show – we still get some valued glimpses of the Duckies, but since this plot was unwound to put them back into the stone-clad palace, they’ve never had quite the same presence in the show.
2) Sally and Kevin divorce:
This was too hastily done, and resulted in two of the worst parings of Sally and Greg, and Kevin and Alison (?) Again the characters’ past was unwound to get them married off for a second time so there could be some family based stories.
3) The Des Barnes Shooting:
Perhaps not a “strategic” blunder, but the whole drug plot leading up to it, and a host of other miserable storylines at the time was far too EastEnders.
4) Derek’s Gnomes:
This way too stupid “plot” dragged on and got tedious and puerile; it resulted in the loss of Derek (the axe did need to fall by then though) and then of course Mavis. It also resulted in the show hardening up a bit too much – the pendulum swung too much the other way (see 3 above).
5) Dev:
I.e. not getting rid of Dev in one of Mad Maya’s OTT explosions. It’s odd how the shop is seen less and less and, fortunately, so is Dev! The whole plot around Dev’s secret children was unbelievable, and although I like his daughter as a character, Dev ought to go – and let someone come in and kit the shop out with some realistic shop fittings…
They’re my thoughts anyway. What do you think?

It said in the Sun today that she tells Les its terminal but I wonder if she is lying?

Apparently:
- As the Websters get together with the Platts for Christmas day dinner, David Platt finds granny Ivy Tilsley’s old diary. It reveals that Gail had planned to abort David when she found out she was pregnant with him – and David chooses to blurt out this news over the sprouts, to everyone’s surprise.
- Cilla has bad news when she finds out her cancer is terminal .
She pushes guilt-stricken Les and Yana into spending Christmas Eve in a bath full of mushy peas to raise funds for her dream fund after she finds out Les and Yana have had a fling. Cilla will then drop a New Year bombshell.
- Danny’s mum accuses Frankie and Jamie of murder when Danny disappears!
God, the Cilla one is very sad if true!

As far as I know only Martin, Kevin and Sally knew. Gail confided in Sally who told Kevin, and then Kevin told Martin.
I completely agree - the worst era of Corrie for me was from the start of 1995 until Brian Park took over in early 1997. I for one could not stand the Don Brennan storylines. Although Brian Park made some major changes to the show most of the axings were for the best and he really made the show excellent viewings. The only downside was that Thelma Barlow who played Mavis quit which meant the end of the Reet and Mave double act. Personally I think Mavis worked a lot better without Derek, some of her best scenes were before they married her off to Derek in 1988, especially the scenes with Reet in the Kavbin.
Talking of Reet she is back tonight!

Regarding the diary, it has been discussed on another forum, but did Ivy actually know that Gail had considered aborting David?
I think it's a case of the writers changing history to suit the storyline.

Oh yeah I see
Sorry, I'm not rlly following this thread much
but as for her being terminal, I think it would be a stupid idea because there is definitely space for a enw comedy character and Cilla has had some pretty funny moments from launching a trike through the Barlows window, stealing flowers from the corner shop for her wedding bouquet and deep fying the turkey when it exploded

We need to see less of that, not more. That was exactly what made me despise her. She was turning Coronation Street into a pantomime. Thankfully they're toning down the character and a storyline like this is just what she needs.

Oh yes Gail told her because they were good friends and worked together - well remembered!
I dont know whether Audrey and Ivy ever found out but secrets do tend to come out in Corrie. Ivy didnt have too high an opinion of Gail after R Brian died, I seem to remember.
