they really ought to close down for a refit and sort out the set once and for all

here here, that pub has not had a facelift since the great fire, and that was 20 years ago! Blimey, most pubs have a facelift every 5 years now (even our small village one is on it's 3 lot of wallpaper since 1986)

The Rovers changed the wallpaper several times during the 70s and early 80s, but yes since the new look Rovers after the fire they havent. I agree new wallpaper is long overdue!

Cant believe its been 20 years, one of my early memories of the show was the fire, an excellent episode, blimey ive been a fan for 20 years (although it was 1989 that I became hooked on Corrie, bit too young to appreciate it 20 years ago!

i think the 3 walled sets are still used but they are more creative with the angles these days, although they could quite easily build a 4 wall set and film inside it. Last night the scenes in number 6 were cleverly cut between indoor set and outdoor set when tracy was showing her parents round, then looking at charlie outside.

talkiing of sets apparently the factory set is no longer on the outdoor lost as it was always too cold to film in there. The new factory set is in the studio and a police station set has been built inside the factory building

The point i made about the back rooms not going behind the stairs is because on eastenders they do, although the houses are a different layout and the kitchens are behind the stairs.

i should have been a set designer

Talking of odd observations...

Why does Liz seem to have a collection of necklaces with a letter 'L' hanging from her neck? I'm sure she's got a new one at the moment. Surely her initial is an 'E' for Elizabeth ('so it is').

L for Liz? sorry if that sounds sarcastic. remember years ago some actress wearing a necklace with her own initials on, rather than her characters, that confused a lot of viewers

Well she is known to most people as Liz.

Her real name is actually Sylvia Butterfield, but she changed her name Elizabeth Dawn, this came about because her daughter is called "Dawn Elizabeth" so she just reversed the names for her stage name.

Thats my Corrie fact for the day!

thought we were talking about Liz Mcdonald not Liz Dawn.

anyway, a while back we were discussing the confusing size of the rovers and somebody mentioned the pub may have been modeled on the original archie street pub.

just found a clip on your tube showing some really old closing titles where camera moves along the full length of the street stopping outside the house of the characters featured in the episode. When it gets to the rovers see how big it is, might explain it's tardis propotions.

Also notice the glad tidings mission is next to the rovers on archie street so the pub was never on the corner in the first place

Were we? Confused Well yes Liz has always been known as Liz rather than Elizabeth. Only Fred and Jim seemed to call her Elizabeth, same as Annie Walker always called Betty "Elizabeth"

What a fabulous clip. Can't say I've ever seen the Rovers looking like that.

Great to hear the theme in full, too.

You know, I've always been a little dismissive about watching old episodes, but I'm beginning to think I might want to borrow some of Jez's collection Wink

Yes, in the 1960 closing credits, the Glad Tidings Mission Hall was positioned next to the Rovers Return (which looked very different, as you can see!) However, this was probably just situated there for the credits only; in all other scenes during the actual programme, the hall (with only Ena Sharples' vestry on view) was positioned opposite the Corner Shop, on the site that the Post Office (or Kabin..) is now.
