the only way the rovers would fit into it's exterior is if the hall was the living room and it had no kitchen. The external side door is meant to be a kitchen door which never seems to be used. it is however well used off camera as a way in to the exterior set as the rovers part of is used as a green room for the extras during outdoor filming. (they used the side door so as not to get in a scene accidentally)
visited the studio tour in 1993 when they were filming and saw extras being ushered through this door to walk through the various scenes

It's the toilets in the Rovers which make it obvious - they must be in Ken's kitchen!
That's why they added that little ginnel that leads nowhere, between t' pub and the Barlow house. Before this version
of the Corrie outdoor set was built, and opened in 1982, there was no gap between t' pub and Ken's gaff, givng the
impression that the Gents loo was in Ken's living room, and the cellar would've been in Ken's basement!
One major inconsistency that's been my bugbear about the Rovers Return, is about the front doors. On the interior
set, they look about 40% wider than they do on the exterior set. Other than that, the Rovers Return has, for many
years (even before The Great Fire of Weatherfield during Summer 1986) looked like it's much bigger on the inside,
than it is on the outside. The only (not entirely sensible) conclusion I can think of right now, is that the Rovers
must've been designed and built by Doctor Who, whilst having a one week working holiday in Weatherfield!

Actually in the first episodes of the program in 1960, the end credits show a pan along a real street in Manchester, which was apparently the inspiration for the street's overall design. When it gets to the Rovers, the exterior is totally differnt to how it appears now, with the building continuing quite a lot further than it does now. What could have originally happened was that the interior of the Rovers was designed around this exterior, and then by the time the physical exterior of the street was built, it wasn't considered worth changing the design, and thus has stuck ever since. Only an idea though, so I could be totally wrong.

do you mean this street?

sorry it's the wrong end but i couldn't find another one
it may explain why the original outdoor street set had a church at the bottom of the road opposite the pub

I've been looking some old VHS tapes I've not watched for ages ... and look what I found on one of them . . .

IIRC ... this wasn't actually the original screening of this episode, but the repeat shown on ITV at 9pm the night after.
Looking back, this has to be undeniably of the best Corrie episodes ... ever.

I also agree that the Rovers' fire was one of the best episodes that the show has ever transmitted. You can see there that the exterior is much smaller than the interior - that was when they had the Select bar. On one website I've seen (Corrie.net, I believe) there is a plan of the original Rovers bar. It never would have fit the exterior!

interesting pictures, still haven't fathomed out how to put them in my posts though
nice to see a picture of archie street when it was lived in, pity the pub isn't in it, maybe the archie street pub was bigger which is why the rovers has that tardis look about it.
then again look at the queen vic in eastenders, that has a similar tardis effect with the side door on albert square which outside is about a foot from the end of the building yet inside has enough room to fit another row of seats in
i guess set designers have never really paid much attention to interior and exterior continuity from the very start of tv.
In a really old episode of steptoe and son they are in a house with the front door in the right hand corner of the set yet when they exit from the outside the front door is to the left
they probably don't expect people to pay that much attention to details
i do, when i was a child i wrote to granada asking them why ivy tilsley's house didn't have a kitchen window (it had a spice rack)
