I agree Jez. I actually find it annoying that it takes up the whole night now - I suppose I could video the second episode and watch it some other time - but the quality is definately suffering as a result, with stretched out storylines and the obvious crow-barring of cliff hangers into the 7.30 episode to conclude at 8.30, it is getting as desperate as Neighbours for episode cliff hangers. Even the recent fire was a huge let down, what should have been a major Corrie disaster just felt like another plot device to provide a cliff hanger. Is this now a permanent arrangement for Mondays?
Where's the evidence to say the quality is suffering?
I gave the example of the fire for a start, and there's been a host of drawn out minor plots which could have been cleared up in one scene, but sometimes it feels like scenes are a rehash of a previous one - the story didn't move along. Crossroads was guilty of it in the 80s. In my opinion, having watched Corrie for as long as I can remember from sometime in the mid-1970s, I consider that 5 episodes a week is stretching things too far, and as a result, quality overall is going down. There are still some great moments, but just a bit too much padding at times.
I agree with that, its still my fave show and ive watched it since the Mid 1980s, but the last couple of Monday doubles have been one long yawn, the cliffhangera at the end of the 7.30pm episode are often very weak so im not suprised up to 2 million people cant be bothered to rejoin the show at 8.30pm, its the same with Emmerdale, we have it on a Sunday night - why? when its already on every weeknight, its going to make people sick of watching soaps with them on so often on ITV, unfortunately ITV have been showing the extra Emmerdale and Corrie episodes for so long now its unlikely they will decrease it.
Yes in the 70s and 80s they only had 2 episodes of Corrie, increasing to 3 a week in 1989, it got high ratings and yet they didnt see the need to show a double bill then so I dont see why they should now.

I still think the quality of the show suffers on a Monday due to the hour, unless it has a really big storyline like the wedding or the bigamy storyline etc, ITV use shows like Corrie and Emmerdale because the are guaranteed high ratings but nearly 2 million people who watched the 7.30pm show didnt bother watching at 8.30pm
