Is there really any need to be that insulting to Jez and Pad?

The Corrie thread has managed to avoid such petty insults and slanging matches to date - go take your condescending and rude views to another part of the Forum if you're not interested in posting about Coronation Street. This is the only part of the Forum I really take part in now thanks to the petty-minded, self-important rot peddled by some.

I wholly agree; Mr Scott, it appears, has bulldozed his way onto this thread with little other to do than insult others and make ill-judged assumptions based on near to nothing.

With this in mind, Gavin, you might want to at least try to do your research before you make assumptions and pathetic attempts at patronising people in the future.

I beg your pardon? Why are you being so astonishingly rude?

Oh, please. I'll beg your pardon, if you don't mind. Let me quote you.

Rudeness enough for you? Probably not, though it would have been if I had written it.

You may be right that the executives of most shows cannot dictate the schedule of the network they broadcast on. However, the executive of the most popular programme on British television probably can. Believe me, he ordered those double episodes for a period of several weeks during the Richard Hillman storyline. Due to their success, he later requested they become a permanent fixture on a Monday night and ITV were delighted to oblige. They would have been stupid not to.

And I do not read TV Quick.

This number of episodes situation. It draws the audience, and whatever you think, ITV are not going to cut down the number of episodes.

However, do you think doing something similar to what The Bill did a few years ago would be good for the show, with two or three hour long episodes going out each week (with the same applying to Emmerdale!).

That is not how the process works, source ?

I think one of the ITV soaps should go down that route, actually, if not only for variety, and I think Emmerdale would be the best suited, purely because I think it is more versatile in that respect and does very good hour-specials.

I can't really see how they could schedule it to please both Coronation Street at 7.30pm and EastEnders on BBC One without clashes, however.

I'm too tired to trawl through endless articles to find the one I read in 2002. Originally, Roberts wanted hour-episodes comissioned to cover the episodes of Maxine's murder, Richard's confession etc, but they had to split it into 2 because of EastEnders going out at 8pm. They were only intended to be temporary, but ITV were happy to commission them regularly due to their success.

Corrie is on for 5 eps (+) because it draws the audience.

It does. But its lazy scheduling on ITV's part putting the same shows on so much. Corrie has always drawn huge audiences but only used to be on twice, and then three times a week. They never felt the need to add extra episodes all the time, even on Christmas Day it wasnt shown unless it fell on a Monday or Wednesday. Now we get extra episodes to support ITV's crap celeb reality shows. I know times have changed and tv is more competitive with digital tv and so many channels etc etc but thats no excuse. Ive said this so many times because I really feel strongly that Corrie would benefit from going back to 3 times a week.

Im no fan of Kieran Roberts I must admit. pad is right, he did push for the show to be shown 5 times a week. Emmerdale also went from 3 to 5 times a week during his time on the show. Obviously I know its ITV's decision what they show, and it is not dictated by a producer/exec producer of one particular series, but he did said he wanted to take the series to 5 nights a week.

I suspect the only reason Jez objects is that he can't make time for his bloody DVD box sets.

Its not because I dont have time to watch it that I want less episodes (although I admit I have stopped watching Emmerdale for the time being as 6 a week is just too much to keep up with), its to make the quality of the show better. ITV should remember its the quality that counts not how many episodes they can manage to fit into the schedules each week.

The problem with Corrie is the extra episodes are always related to the ITV schedule, not to the storyline requiring them.

Thinking about it Corrie has had no more additional episodes this year than Hollyoaks - but the way Hollyoaks is scheduled in a fixed weekday slot - plus the late-night episodes being related to big storylines, it doesn't seem intrusive.

We'll get the problem again in the Spring when episodes are squeezed in the schedule for the World Cup. It's not that they'll be extra episodes, but rather than dropping any on days of football matches, they'll be rescheduled - so expect alot of 8.30 and 10pm editions next June.

That's why I always say I'd prefer them to take it off completly for the month - with a big cliffhanger before the show returns a month later.

Yes, the guy has form in this regard; search his other posts and you'll find he never contributes positive or informative information, or asks pertinent or intelligent questions, but restricts himself to either saying a post doesn't belong on that thread; questioning spelling or grammer, very often making elementary spelling and grammer mistakes himself; or adding what he considers pithy and amusing one-line insults about other posters. If you dare stick up to him he then asks why you are being so "rude", as above. In an ideal world he'd have been kicked off the forum by now, and hope springs eternal and all that, but in the meantime either ignore him or give him some of the stuff he dishes out - he doesn't like it.

Unless of course people start getting fed up of it and switching off. I'm sure of Corrie starts failing to deliver the goods ITV will have no hesitation in cutting the number of episodes.

You and I have had this discussion before Jez, regarding the quality of the output. Previously, you suggested that Corrie was "potentially in danger of being axed" if the 5 show week continued.

I understood the conclusion of that discourse was a common mind between us that the programmes *hadn't* suffered as a result of the increase, but that the actors were probably fatigued and had to be used on a rotational basis (i.e. some actors in it for a while, then others taking over the action for some weeks).

Forgive me for my exasperated comments yesterday, but it occurred to me we were going to have a large, circular conversation all over again.

As to "pad" and "matlock" - I'm afraid as I have no idea who you are I'm at a loss to bring myself to care about your thoughts on my presense or contribution here. I will say again that Executive Producers (flagship show or not) are highly unlikely to have the authority to “order” the network. A “request” or “suggestion” is more likely to be the correct description of what took place. A welcome one to the network, obviously.

DS is reporting that Johnny Briggs a.k.a Mike Baldwin will leave next year Sad :
Digital Spy posted:
Coronation Street star Johnny Briggs is leaving the soap next year.

The actor, who has been a part of the Street for 30 years, will depart as Mike Baldwin loses his battle against Alzheimer's disease.

A spokesman confirmed to the News of the World, "His storyline has some way to run but he will be leaving in 2006 after completing 30 years in the show. It was his decision to retire."

Johnny's current two-year contract expires next autumn, and he has already turned down another £200,000-a-year deal.

Last year, Briggs admitted that he struggled with the show's busy filming schedule, commenting, "When I started we were filming two episodes a week and now we're doing five."

He added, "I'd like to try other acting work like movies."

No great surprise really, its been mentioned for a while that he might be leaving. Interesting that this isnt the first time a long term cast member has complained about the busy schedule, yet more reasons why they need to go back to a maximum of 4 a week.

If Mike is leaving what will happen to Penny?
