It was, although I dont recall her ever mentioning them before. I know she had a sister who appeared for a while in 1988/9. A lot more realistic having a cousin who you never mention than a brother and "nephew" like Mike Baldwin did, especially when it was said that Mike was an only child.

Talking of soap schedules, found some interesting views on the BBC website a few years back, when Corrie first went 5 nights and Emmerdale 5 nights also.
The ITC were even going to order a cut in episodes but this sadly didn't happen. JamesJH though is claiming that Corrie and Emmerdale will be cut back to 3 (allegedly Corrie on Mon/Wed/Fri and Emmerdale Tue/Wed/Thu), though I just cannot see this happening.
The best we could ever hope for from is back to 5 for Emmerdale and 4 for Corrie, I suppose, but even that would be an improvement.

I quote some of the most valid points made:
It's a shame despite this unanimous backlash on the BBC's website, nothing has ever happened, and the ITC did not order a reduction. I say we all email Ofcom (formerly ITC) now with our views.

Go there, click Programmes on TV/Radio , then Scheduling , then type ITV into the box.

The only soap I watch is Corrie and I really enjoy it, but heartily wish it was on fewer nights a week. I think much of the suspense of the storylines is lost when we have to wait no time at all for the next instalment - I remember when Corrie was on just two nights a week and the thrill of having to wait with baited breath for the next episode several days later. I find it harder to stick with the programme now because it's inevitable I miss one or two shows each week.
Quote:
I think that there are too many soaps on evening telly, I think that three nights a week is more than adequate, I don't understand why Coronation Street is on twice on Mondays. That is just ridiculous, Emmerdale is on too often as well. Five nights a week is far too much. You can get easilly bored of these and I feel the ITC do have a valid point.
Quote:
Over the last two years, I have also become convinced that we are on the brink of a general backlash against soaps, i.e. people will stop watching them in large numbers. To counter this the producers should reduce the total number of hours transmitted each week and make the individual programmes longer, therefore requiring fewer viewing occasions. What's wrong with a soap being transmitted only once or twice a week after all?

There are far too many soaps on our television screens. They are all beginning to lose steam and are starting to use the same plot-lines again and again but with different characters and in a different place. The writers need to scrap a majority of the soap operas on TV and focus on just one or two. This would leave space for other programming which is new and upcoming. Soaps are doing nothing anymore other than block new programmes from being given the attention they deserve.

It's a very 'Neighbours' thing to do bringing in relatives who've never been mentioned before. Are we really supposed to believe that the rest of the Baldwins didn't turn up to any of Mike's weddings or even Alma's funeral, despite them apparently being on relatively good terms?

The ITC were useless, and offcom are even worst. Personally I think its a complete waste of time e-mailing offcom as they will do nothing.
i agree with those points. When Corrie was on 2 nights a week (Monday and Wednesday) I hated waiting 5 days for the next episode after Wednesday's and welcomed the Friday episode in 1989 (being 8 years old at the time everyone was very excited in school when the teacher told us that morning it was on). However they have just taken it too far now. Overall I really enjoy the show (it went through a bad patch in the summer but has improved loads since the end of Charlie and Shelly) however I just wish there were fewer episodes a week. I also agree that so many soaps is stopping other programmes being show especially quiz shows in the 7pm slots. Emmerdale on 6 nights a week is ridiculous and ive more or less given up watching. (however I wouldnt give up watching Corrie regardless of the number of episodes)

True, but its the fact they have changed history that annoys me.Just like Susan Barlow had an abortion in 1987 so Adam doesnt really exist.
I also couldnt believe my eyes when I read a letter in one of the tv guides saying Les and Cilla are the new Hilda and Stan - what an insult to 2 of the shows best loved characters.

That surprised me too. I always thought that the writers have developed Vera & Jack as the replacement for Stan & Hilda. They certainly do have some of the best comic lines and plots.
Les & Cilla are just too much sometimes, neither are particularly believable characters.

Received this from ITV regarding the scheduling of its soaps:

Thank you for your email and comments, which I have recorded on our Duty
Log seen by senior management throughout ITV.
Coronation Street and Emmerdale are two of the most watched programmes
on TV in the UK and we always get many complaints when they are taken
off for example when football matches are on. They have a very loyal
following of millions of viewers. The scheduling of programmes is a
commercial one. ITV receives the majority of it's revenue from
advertising and if we did not show the type of programmes that attract a
high audience then the advertisers would not wish to buy the airtime.
OFCOM are only able to take complaints regarding the content of
programmes, as previously advised the number of episodes that a
particular one is shown is a commercial decision.
Thank you for taking the time to write in with your views.

Just as I would expect. Ofcom won't do anything about those rip-off quiz channels so they may as well not exist at all and lets save some taxpayers money - or give them proper bite.
Anyway this is a Corrie thread so I'll stick to subject.
Jez, you said Adam doesn't really exist; the storyliners clearly believe that too as he's a spare part of a character - he may as well not exist. Is this down to his shockingly limited acting abilities?

I thought e-mailing offcom/itv would do no good.
LOL pootle5, I quite agree. Adam is just a spare part, and probabaly there for a bit of eye candy. Its certainly isnt his acting that they hired him for.
When Susan told Mike she had an abortion "I had to, I had no choice" she said. He said "the day you killed my baby, you killed our marriage". Interestingly they included the following episode on the 80s DVD set, not that one. Maybe they thought people would notice if they include the one where he threw her out. In 2001 it was revealed that she lied not only to Mike but Ken and Deirdre, but I dont believe for a second that she did. They just rewrote history to suit themselves.

From the Mirror:
13 December 2005
RITA'S CORRIE HORROR
Star relives terrifying burglary
CORRIE star Barbara Knox is to relive a harrowing real-life drama for the soap.
Her character Rita Sullivan will suffer a terrifying burglary - just like Barbara did earlier this year.
The 72-year-old star was so badly shaken by the raid at her flat near Granada's Manchester studios friends feared she would never go back.
Now the wounds are to be re-opened in the mirror-image storyline.
An insider said: "The similarities are astounding. When we heard about the plot we really felt for Barbara because the burglary hit her hard. She hasn't felt safe in the flat since."
Rita will return from the shops to discover her front door kicked off its hinges and her flat wrecked. She is frozen with fear to think the intruder may still be inside but calls burly butcher Fred Elliott (John Savident) for help before ringing the police.
Thugs targeted Barbara's city centre apartment in March after breaking into a communal area.
