Can anyone remember Raquel's return to Coronation Street at New Year in, I think the year 2000?

It was a 45 minute episode, which I thought was very strange at the time, but to Corrie that was a special event. Shame, now we're bombarded with hour specials and double episodes everywhere. Rolling Eyes

Yeah I remember that. It was shown on New Years Day 2000. I agree, hour long episodes used to be special. Now there are so many episodes all year round.

I thought the Raquel episode was a 45 minute special 2 hander on January 2nd, with the Millenium street party episode as a one hour special on January 1st?

I take it that the 45th anniversary next week is not being celebrated, unlike the 35th?

Oh yeah, it was screened on January the 2nd, my mistake. It was set in the early hours of New Years Day though.

Yes they are doing nothing to celebrate the 45th - apparently the budget has all been spent on ITV's 50th. However I expect big celebrations for the 50th. And they have brought out a new book and DVD's this year however they are not specially for the 45th I dont think.

We arn't bombared with hour specials. Christmas Day is the only time that happens.

Of course thesedays there's about 54 double episodes per year which more than makes up for this!

The episode tally over Christmas is interesting:

Coronation Street - Extra 30 mins (normal episodes plus hour special on Xmas Day)

Emmerdale - No extra episodes (Hour on Xmas Day with no episode the previous Sunday)

EastEnders - Extra 90 mins (Hour special on Xmas Day, of course EE isn't normally on on a Sunday, plus an episode on Wednesday 28th)

So if anything its the BBC relying on soaps this Christmas

Maybe you're right and we're not inundated with hour specials from Coronation Street, but we certainly do have a fair amount of one hour episodes from Emmerdale. This is too much with 6 episodes a week going out anyway, plus it causes problems for those who are E'Dale and EE fans.

Regarding CStreet, the double episodes on a Monday night are unnecessary 95% of the time, and the triple bills are even more pathetic. PLUS, there is a double episode on Friday 23rd December too. So there is 60 minutes of extra Corrie.

Friday 23rd at 8.30pm is a Corrie Family Album not a normal episode.

I agree about Emmerdale being on far too much. Ive hardly watched Emmerdale recently as its just too many episodes to keep up with.

Well of course, what a milestone that will be, very few shows have ever lasted that long.

Yes, glanced at the book in WHSmith, it's actually in a box, includes a book and a DVD, with highlights over the years. It's called Coronation Street Treasures, the synopsis is as follows:

Containing previously unpublished removable memorabilia, intricately reproduced in facsimile form, this unique album provides an amazing record of 45 years of life on Britain's most famous street. House by house, we discover all sorts of fascinating lost treasures, from birth certificates, invitations, love letters and court summonses to divorce papers, old pub menus, newspaper cuttings, clocking-in cards from the factory, ads from the shop window and much more. And Coronation Street historian Tim Randall threads it all together to paint a vivid and evocative history of each premises on the street, piecing together the stories of each generation from the evidence they've left behind.

Sounds very good.

Here are the writers for the festive period.

18th - 7.30 - Jonathan Harvey
19th - 7.30 - Mark Wadlow
19th - 8.30 - John McVerry
21st - 7.30 - Mark Burt
23rd - 7.30 - John Fay
25th - 8.00 - Joe Turner
26th - 7.30 - Jonathan Harvey
26th - 8.30 - John Fay
28th - 7.30 - Catherine Hayes
30th - 7.30 - Joe Turner

Boxing Day looks great with two of the best writers. Not sure about Joe Turner on Xmas Day though, he's never struck me as an outstanding writer. J Harvey is writing Kelly Crabtree's ordeal on December 18 which should be good too, he's incredibly good at dramatic episodes.

LOL.

Sally: 'Go and shave your head again you can audition for the next Lord of the Rings'
Janice: 'Why you little...'
Danny: 'Oi, stop it you desperate fishwives!'

Very funny episode tonight.

Some good lines tonight, including Claire's, "shut up, you demented cow". Laughing That's the sort of comedy we like, not slapstick Cilla.

I've got a question for you guys,I'm not much of a Corrie fan anymore but maybe this man (Steve Frost) everyone seems to be relying on can change that,But i was just thinking reading a post about him saving Corrie on ds.Do you think he will keep the same Writers?

Big cheer in our house when she said that!

Also loved the stuff with Rosie and Sophie - showing that teenagers can be responsible!
