Thats why I always watch it, Andrew, regardless of the storylines. Its the show I never miss an episode of.

A proper fan of Coronation Street would watch, not because the like orr dislike the current major storyline going on, but because of all the little bits of character acting that goes on around it.

For example, exchanges between Norris Cole and Blanche Hunt, or Roy Cropper and Vera Duckworth never get mentioned in any previews, but they are always worth watching.

I've watched for as long as I can remember, and can remember things from about 1976, I've rarely missed an episode. The trouble is there can be too much of a good thing, and they are pushing it, particularly with daft main plots. So despite the often (but not consistent or guarenteed side plots and scenes) I find missing an episode or three less of an issue these days - it's wallpaper, always there and sometimes annoys. A "proper fan" (and I am happy to admit to being one) should be more concerned about ITV wearing out the plots, the characters and therefore the programme - and I fear this is what they are doing. I want to be watching it in 40 years time, as a "proper fan" I am concerned about the reasons why I can't be bothered to watch the next episode - they simply aren't attracting me at the moment.

Ive watched it since 1976 storylines as well as Granada Plus started off its repeat run with April 1976 and ran it up to Early 1994. Been watching on ITV since the Mid 1980s when I was about 5 years old. I remember storylines clearly from about 1987/1988/1989, stuff like Hilda leaving, Mavis and Derek's wedding, the police coming to tell Gail that Brian had been stabbed to death, and Alan trying to kill Rita.

I got my Corrie 1980s DVD box set today, havent watched it yet but ive been looking at the episode descriptions and im pleased they have included the episode where Alan tried to Kill Rita in 1989, ive not seen that episode since Plus, ive seen the one with the the tram (which is also on the DVD) many times though. I cant wait to hear Barbara Knox fluff that line "Your a fraud Iron ,a liar, a cheat and a fraud". Anyone else got the DVD set? The 1970s and 1980s are my joint favourate decades for Corrie so im glad they have released these 2 decades on DVD. I can honestly say I enjoyed the 1970s DVDs a lot more than any of the episodes ive seen on ITV recently.

I agree with what you say about them wearing out the plots. ive said so many times there are too many episodes and it is running out of steam. Its still my favourate but will never be as good as the 70s/80s.

Isn't the Jason / Sarah storyline awful. Last night felt like a very dodgy 70s porn flick, not Corrie!

Though not entirely believable, I am liking the Dev storyline at the moment and the way it's unfolding - I just wish it led to his exit, not Sunita's.

They need to get moving though now with some major storylines - there doesn't seem to be anything brewing at the moment which could turn into a long-running storyline!

Agreed. They should have warned us to have a bucket ready before last nights episode.

Ive been watching the first few episodes on 1980s DVD's and they were great, some of them didnt have particularly huge memorable storylines running but they were still great. They need more of that these days, episodes being excellent but with nothing that big going on, just everyone going about their daily lives. These days its love triangles, affairs almost every week.

I agree, it's certainly not the gritty realism it once was, quite recently plost seem to be popping up out of nowhere, there's been no development, there's been no explanation, they just happen. I'm not expecting the show to be true to life, but I do want it to have that realistic effect where if Sarah is going to have an affair with Jason make it plausible. It wouldn't make sense for her to dump Scooter on a whim (although I'm glad he's gone) and just become this, dare I say it, tart. It's this personality that we haven't seen from the character and quite frankly you wouldn't expect to see from the character.
Even last year the storylines were far more developed, especially the Tracy/Steve/Karen saga, it was more built up and very well developed, this has started way back before the confrontation but it was slow burner. Back to the present, and apparently Dev has a few kids he didn't tell Sunita about, how long did this take to develop? A few episodes at the most, and this was probably the day they wrongly decided to axe Sunita.
I'm glad Tony is off, he did wonders last year but this year he really has lost his way quite a bit. I do hope Steve Frost can bring the show back to what it was, instead of what we're seeing today. I love Coronation Street which is why I'm quite concerned. I do hope that things get better, for the sake of the show.

I don't think the show though is in anywhere near as bad a state as it was in the couple of years before the Richard Hillman storyline put it back on top - and it's certainly still far superior than EastEnders which is stuck in a 20th century timewarp!

I dont think Corrie was in a bad state in 2000-2002. Jane McNaught was producer at the time and she wasnt anywhere near as bad as people say. Her first year as producer (2000) was superb, with so many brilliant storylines (Mike/Linda/Mark triangle, Sarah's teen pregnancy, Jez Quigley, and the live episode) In 2001 they tried to make the show more gritty and wanted 1 blockbuster storyline a month, so we got Toyah's rape, Alma's battle with cancer, Sarah and the pervert - it all went a bit dark and depressing, but it was still very watchable. There was also some comedy during this period, not like Kieran Roberts period when there was next to no comedy, and in Tony Wood's era where there is far too much panto comedy.

Last nights episode was quite good, I quite like this feud that is growing between Tracy and Claire, I also like the storyline with Carol Baldwin, I think they are handing this storyline very well.

I thought last nights episode was brilliant, especially the Jamie/Carol/Frankie stuff.

Disagree with the Tracy/Claire storyline though - don't like it one bit. It worked well with Tracy and Karen, but this is just bullying and if we want that we can watch the Mitchells!

On the other hand though if it's dealt with properly it could be good to show that bullying isn't confined to schools!
