Thats why I always watch it, Andrew, regardless of the storylines. Its the show I never miss an episode of.
I've watched for as long as I can remember, and can remember things from about 1976, I've rarely missed an episode. The trouble is there can be too much of a good thing, and they are pushing it, particularly with daft main plots. So despite the often (but not consistent or guarenteed side plots and scenes) I find missing an episode or three less of an issue these days - it's wallpaper, always there and sometimes annoys. A "proper fan" (and I am happy to admit to being one) should be more concerned about ITV wearing out the plots, the characters and therefore the programme - and I fear this is what they are doing. I want to be watching it in 40 years time, as a "proper fan" I am concerned about the reasons why I can't be bothered to watch the next episode - they simply aren't attracting me at the moment.
Ive watched it since 1976 storylines as well as Granada Plus started off its repeat run with April 1976 and ran it up to Early 1994. Been watching on ITV since the Mid 1980s when I was about 5 years old. I remember storylines clearly from about 1987/1988/1989, stuff like Hilda leaving, Mavis and Derek's wedding, the police coming to tell Gail that Brian had been stabbed to death, and Alan trying to kill Rita.
I got my Corrie 1980s DVD box set today, havent watched it yet but ive been looking at the episode descriptions and im pleased they have included the episode where Alan tried to Kill Rita in 1989, ive not seen that episode since Plus, ive seen the one with the the tram (which is also on the DVD) many times though. I cant wait to hear Barbara Knox fluff that line "Your a fraud Iron ,a liar, a cheat and a fraud". Anyone else got the DVD set? The 1970s and 1980s are my joint favourate decades for Corrie so im glad they have released these 2 decades on DVD. I can honestly say I enjoyed the 1970s DVDs a lot more than any of the episodes ive seen on ITV recently.
I agree with what you say about them wearing out the plots. ive said so many times there are too many episodes and it is running out of steam. Its still my favourate but will never be as good as the 70s/80s.

A proper fan of Coronation Street would watch, not because the like orr dislike the current major storyline going on, but because of all the little bits of character acting that goes on around it.
For example, exchanges between Norris Cole and Blanche Hunt, or Roy Cropper and Vera Duckworth never get mentioned in any previews, but they are always worth watching.
