Just less episodes every week would help! Get rid of the 2nd Monday episode and stop pointless hour long episodes (like Sunday's) and reserve them for big plot endings only. They are killing the goose...
I completely agree, but unfortunately ITV doesn't seem to consider the long term effect so many episodes may have on its most valuable asset providing it delivers ratings in the short term.
I think Sunday's hour-long episode was to make up for having no episode on Friday though.

That's one thing they should do - drop episodes rather than reschedule them when things like football and F1 get in the way.
Ideally they'd also be dropped on Bank Holidays, but obviously ITV have nothing else to put on - and let's face it, apart from the soaps there was nothing on TV last night!
I for one though do think five episodes a week is about right, and when used properly the Monday doubles do work well.
did set up a thread on this topic, but I'm now going to ask specifically for Coronation Street - do you think the show would benefit from a summer break?
A summer break is a good idea in theory but I dont think it would work or ITV would ever let it happen as Coronation Street pulls in the viewers. What they need to do is reduce the number of episodes being screened each week. It should go out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday ONLY. They would then get the chance to develop storylines better and possibly viewing figures might be even higher. Occasional 1 hour specials or doubles would be OK for special episodes but no more than 3 or 4 a year.

Those people would complain even more if it wasn't on all together.
People would complain yes if it was off for say 6 weeks. I would certainly miss it. However I think they should show it all year but in moderation i.e 3 episodes a week as ive said before. I thought episodes on Monday, Wedneday and Friday evening was perfect.

Five is too much. Since the Monday double's started there have only been about 6 of them which
really
needed a double episode. Often the cliffhangers between part 1 and 2 are quite weak.

I totally agree with you both.
I didnt mind so much about Sunday's 1 hour episode since it was because of the football on Friday, but it would have done no harm to have 1 less episode for once.

As for last night's episodes, it all did seem rather random - as if the scriptwriters had just dropped some acid. As Jez said though, Bank Holiday episodes do tend to be a bit lighter in their nature.
Janice's haircut was quite entertaining. Has the actress actually had it done, or is it just a very good bald wig? The shot of the hair being cut was so close up, there's no way of telling if it was hers. I think Sean has done her a favour really though - her hair beforehand looked like a poorly conditioned helmet.
I agree. I didnt think last nights episodes were bad at all, just that they were lighter than usual. We cant have lots of drama al the time. I think Vicky who plays Janice had to get her hair shaved in real life
I am all for 3 episodes a week, it would give ITV the chance to commission more comedy, current affairs and early evening quality drama. I also think Emmerdale should be cut to 3 a week, and no soaps on Sundays, I really believe a weekend break is vital so that it gives space for cliffhangers, they could take a four week break in the summer perhaps, this seems to work well in Australia when Neighbours takes a break. I also understand about about lighter storylines, but theres light yet good to watch, then light but slightly boring, I think the episode where Norris thought Rita was dead was brilliant. That was a nice episode with some light relief, yet still great writing and some classic comic moments. Last night I think it was bit pointless. I have to admit I was wishing Charlie and Shelly would pop again and get me interested as I was missing them.
I have to admit I hadn't realised that there was no episode on Friday. I'd missed Wednesday's as I was out, and I assumed I'd missed one on Friday when I was out too!
I thought the bits I'd not seen on ITV2's Sunday omninbus were a bit short...
Makes me laugh how people say ITV would never give Corrie a break - but offer cutting back to three episodes a week as an alternative!
If it were up to me, I'd say put it (and any other soap) on every weeknight - but no episodes on Bank Holidays or over Christmas / New Year.
Episodes dropped rather than rescheduled for sport and a complete break when regular interuptions will occur for a major sporting event!
Talking of comedy though, I do think it be worth ITV giving some of the Corrie team a shot at developing their own sitcom and then air it on Mon 8.30pm for six weeks, replacing Corrie.
Very good episodes tonight - well written as well!
I thought the opposite, there were one or two good bits, but some of the storylines appeared to be dropped in like they were in a bad episode of Crossroads (the original one). Claire's tirade about being public spirited was dreadful - and very cheesily linked to some ITV campaign at the end. The bit with Claire with the bloke in the taxi where she started crying was a bit pathetic too.
Where did Rosie get nits from - she's been off school for the best part of 6 weeks?
What was all that about the safari park and Deidrie's glasses?
Why was Penny so upset about Mike not turning up at the factory in time - her reaction seemed a bit OTT?
These were two dodgy episodes I think.
I have to agree with you. The writing was very random and sometimes silly in both episodes. The absence of Daran Little and Jonathan Harvey didn't do Corrie justice this bank hol [...]
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that Monday's 7:30 episode was written by Jonathan Harvey? I remember seeing his name in the opening titles and also remember thinking how good the episode would be, due to the fact that he'd written it! Oh well...

You really are missing the point. There is no point or value to the loyal viewers (or ITV) in stopping a continuing drama for Christmas, summer holiday, your bath night, or any other period of time. What they do in Oz is in their tradition and I don't think it would work here with the major soaps like Corrie, Eastenders or Emmerdale at peak time as they are such a key part of the schedule.
What a number of people seem to agree on here, is that there are simply too many episodes per week - this is resulting in a fast turn over in storylines needing a huge cast - half of which the viewer forgets or simply doesn't give two hoots about.
Having a few weeks off would break the continuing nature of the programme. It doesn't need artificial annual "clifhangers" which will almost certainly need to be leaked to the press to ensure that the 12million viewers remember to return a month later, after they've gone off and found other TV channels and other things to do. It would be too dangerous for ITV to risk people "breaking the habit".
Therefore, cutting back episodes per week would do the job (for the viewer not necessarily ITV in the short term); having a break wouldn't really get to the root of the problem for anyone.

Ok, I was jumping the gun as I didn't actually see who wrote the 7.30 episode but from the scriptwork I presumed it wasn't JH. I am disappointed if he did write that bodge job but... Oh well...

Well realistically ITV arent going to give Corrie a long break during the summer or at Christmas. Cutting back the number of epsodes is more realistic, up until 1996 Corrie only went out 3 times a week and that was much better, up until 1989 it only went out twice and there was a long gap between the Wed and Monday episodes so I welcomed it going 3 times a week, that was perfect. With the amount of episodes that have gone out in the last 2-3 years the quality was bound to suffer sooner or later, and some episodes have recently been below standard but still very watchable and its improved over the last few weeks but I still think less episodes and the quality will increase further.

But why do we need to have them on every weeknight? If they insist on 5 episodes per week id rather have it as it is then on 5 consecutive nights (i.e. Mon-Fri). Ive hardly watched Emmerdale over the last 2 weeks as the 6 nights a week schedule is just too much to keep up with and when I do watch I rarely watch all 6. Corrie is the only one I never miss regardless of how many episodes go out, but id still prefer 3.

I totally agree. And I have no problem with the soaps being on Christmas day as its kind of traditional now.
As for Jonathan Harvey I think he is one of the best writers Corrie has. I have no problem with the episode he wrote on Monday, the episode was so-so, and as I said light for Bank Holiday.
Im liking Carol a lot and her scenes in the factory and the Rovers were good. It was funny when Jamie walked in with Leanne at the end and the whole pub went quite. It also seems that Mike's Alzheimers storyline has started as well.
Isnt that gardener friend of Claire's rather gorgeous.
It was funny when Norris mistook Janice for a man Have to say her new hair style isnt as bad as I thought it would be and it almost suits her
Sally has been brilliant in recent episodes - i half expected her to offer that head teacher sex in return for allowing Sophie to go to Weatherfield High
