It all depends what everyone is calling old. I mean Mike Baldwin is always involved in a storyline and he's not exactly young. Audrey is always involved in the latest Platt's storyline. Emily Bishop and all the other oldies was in the Mel Hutchright storyline only a few weeks ago, plus Blanche Hunt is in every scene lately.
On tonight's episode, Danny Baldwin referred to Kelly as "Legs", I thought she was "Crabby" and that Sonia one used to be "Legs"?
Well the oldies do get storylines but not much and they take a back seat compaired to the youngsters. Mike had been on holiday for what felt like months and hasnt had a decent storyline since Mark and Linda. Audrey hasnt done much since Richard Hillman and the Mel Hutchright storyline was back in May and only lasted 10 episodes or something. Emily and Blanche are in it often though I agree. However in the preview for next weeks Whats On TV it says "Is Rita dead?"
She cant be dead since it would have been all over the press, but I hope this is a decent storyline for her since its about time they gave Barb something to do.
As far as I know Danny didnt give Sonia a nickname (or Angela). The others all got nicknames : Janice was lippy, Karen was bolshy, Fizz was Fuzz, Hayley was Hayles, and Kelly was legs. Crabby is a name given to her by her mates.
I throughly enjoyed last nights 2 episodes, even the scenes with Crabby and Adam werent that bad. It was funny when she was all over him and he just stood there like the plank of wood he is. Infact they are both wooden. He gets together with Candice though so him and crabby wont last.
I suppose because Vera and Ivy started off working at the factory and didnt live on the Street (like Crabby, Jessie and Joanne do today) they didnt feel the need to introduce family for them until they were more regular characters.
Vera was in it from Aug 1974, but Liz Dawn had been an extra in it for a while before. . Bill Tarmey turns up as an extra in the rovers from time to time in the mid to late 70s before appearing as Jack in 2 episodes in Nov 1979. He wasnt seen again until Mid 1981 when Vera left Jack for some fella (or he threw her out) and she landed herself on Ivy, and so Ivy got Bert to ask Jack to come and persuade Vera to return home. From then on the Duckworths were more regular characters and finally moved into the Street in 1983.

I wouldn't say older characters are underused today at all, but I suppose if you're talking storyline wise then I suppose I agree.

I have read about the Ivy/Vera 'confusion' (if you like) in many of Daran Little's books; it seems quite confusing though that it took a number of years for Vera's husband to finally materialise, though as Ena said at Brian and Gail's wedding, maybe she didn't like to be seen out with him
I first noticed Vera in the background in one 1970's episode during the Granada+ run, it should be nice to see those old background appearances from actors before they became Corrie regulars - I understand Jack also did quite a few, as well as those later characters such as Don Brennan, etc.
