I wouldn't say older characters are underused today at all, but I suppose if you're talking storyline wise then I suppose I agree.

It all depends what everyone is calling old. I mean Mike Baldwin is always involved in a storyline and he's not exactly young. Audrey is always involved in the latest Platt's storyline. Emily Bishop and all the other oldies was in the Mel Hutchright storyline only a few weeks ago, plus Blanche Hunt is in every scene lately.

On tonight's episode, Danny Baldwin referred to Kelly as "Legs", I thought she was "Crabby" and that Sonia one used to be "Legs"?

Well the oldies do get storylines but not much and they take a back seat compaired to the youngsters. Mike had been on holiday for what felt like months and hasnt had a decent storyline since Mark and Linda. Audrey hasnt done much since Richard Hillman and the Mel Hutchright storyline was back in May and only lasted 10 episodes or something. Emily and Blanche are in it often though I agree. However in the preview for next weeks Whats On TV it says "Is Rita dead?" Shocked She cant be dead since it would have been all over the press, but I hope this is a decent storyline for her since its about time they gave Barb something to do.

As far as I know Danny didnt give Sonia a nickname (or Angela). The others all got nicknames : Janice was lippy, Karen was bolshy, Fizz was Fuzz, Hayley was Hayles, and Kelly was legs. Crabby is a name given to her by her mates.

I throughly enjoyed last nights 2 episodes, even the scenes with Crabby and Adam werent that bad. It was funny when she was all over him and he just stood there like the plank of wood he is. Infact they are both wooden. He gets together with Candice though so him and crabby wont last.

I have read about the Ivy/Vera 'confusion' (if you like) in many of Daran Little's books; it seems quite confusing though that it took a number of years for Vera's husband to finally materialise, though as Ena said at Brian and Gail's wedding, maybe she didn't like to be seen out with him Laughing

I first noticed Vera in the background in one 1970's episode during the Granada+ run, it should be nice to see those old background appearances from actors before they became Corrie regulars - I understand Jack also did quite a few, as well as those later characters such as Don Brennan, etc.

I suppose because Vera and Ivy started off working at the factory and didnt live on the Street (like Crabby, Jessie and Joanne do today) they didnt feel the need to introduce family for them until they were more regular characters.

Vera was in it from Aug 1974, but Liz Dawn had been an extra in it for a while before. . Bill Tarmey turns up as an extra in the rovers from time to time in the mid to late 70s before appearing as Jack in 2 episodes in Nov 1979. He wasnt seen again until Mid 1981 when Vera left Jack for some fella (or he threw her out) and she landed herself on Ivy, and so Ivy got Bert to ask Jack to come and persuade Vera to return home. From then on the Duckworths were more regular characters and finally moved into the Street in 1983.

I remember the scenes you have mentioned very well, Jez.

I've watched most of the box set, from 1970-1977 so far. Although some of these earlier episodes take slightly longer to make sense (in a way), they are very enjoyable. Nice to see a mic coming into shot in a scene in the Ogden's house, as well as appearances from Gail, Rita and Mike (my younger sister was gobsmacked to say the least when she saw Gail back then!) - also nice to see Ena trying to keep her dentures in place... Laughing

Blimey you got through those episodes quickly. Yes its amazing how much some of them have changed. Ken looked quite dashing back then as well and Deirdre looked nice with the long hair.

I read this today - a storyline for Reet!

Audrey outs Rita as love-cheat

Corrie's script-writers are set to unleash a shocking secret that has laid dormant in the murky nooks and crannies of the Street's collective psyche for years.

Rita Sullivan, the long-standing owner of the Kabin and doyenne of Weatherfield, once conducted a tempestuous relationship with now-dead Alf Roberts.

Rita, played by 67-year-old Barbara Knox, is finally found out when Alf's widow Audrey finds an undeveloped camera film while clearing out her dead husband's belongings.

The resulting photos are enough to shock the most hardened of Corrie fans - they depict Rita and Alf in a steamy embrace on Blackpool beach.

The resulting feud between Rita and Audrey is set to "divide all the other residents on the Street", a Corrie mole told the Daily Star.

Audrey, furious that her old friend once betrayed her, calls Rita "a red-haired hussy and an old slapper".

Rita has been no stranger to romance. In over thirty years on the soap she has been married to builder Len, nasty Alan and nice Ted, so to some the dangerous liaison with corner-shop owner Alf will come as no surprise

That sounds like an interesting story, I wonder if this will be the usual slanging match between Audrey and Rita.

On a side note though, Jez, I have to agree with you - Ken was indeed good-looking back then!

Well I knew Alf always liked Rita, even back in the 70s before she married Len. I think he married both Renee and Audrey when he liked Rita more than either of them. He proposed to Rita in 1985, 2 years after Len had died but she turned him down as she only ever wanted to be friends, then he married Audrey.

Barbara and Sue are 2 of the best actresses Corrie has got so its time they used them more often.

*Gail's past with Richard is dragged up by Phil the reflexologist, and her love rivalry with Eileen intensifies
*Candice's fling with Adam ends in tears, and her exit
*Upon Steve's return, he finds Nathan is playing happy families with Tracy. He vows to battle her in court.

Most of those spoilers sound good. The 1 for Martin sounds crap though as does more Tracy/Steve.

I reckon Sean Wilson could play that part very well! Smile

Who's this mystery from Rita's past?

Surely it's Alf?

The Baldwin meal was good last night, and the fighting between Jack and Vera brilliant. Getting back on track, I think.

Yes I think its been back on track this past week. They need to make sure they maintain the standard though and dont go down the route of crap storylines. The sooner Charlie and Shelly are over the better though. And they need to get rid of Keith, Diggory, the twins, Kelly and Nathan. I like Freda and Lloyd though.

Did anyone get the free DVD that was available from Woolworths today? The coupon was in the Sun newspaper. It was the episode where Alan Bradley got killed by a tram in Blackpool, originally shown in 1989. I got it as my existing copy of this episode is over 10 years old and no longer in good quality ive watched it that many times. Mind you I expect they will put this episode on the 80s DVD set.

Another bit that was good was when Norris and Mrs Bishop had to travel in Dev's car, and his mobile phone rang!
