Read this in the paper yesterday.

ITV bosses are hoping Bill Tarmy and Liz Dawn will stay on for at least 2 more years as they want to stage extravagant telly celebrations for Jack and Vera's golden wedding in 2007 via a special documentry and a prequel which will star young actors showing how the couple first met and tied the knot.

Well this sounds good indeed - I hope they get this 'prequel' done properly. If so, then the whole thing could be good viewing.

I agree. Lets hope they do it properly. Vera's been in it since 1974 but not a regular character until the 1980s. They did something simular about the life of Patricia Phoenix (who played Elsie Tanner in Corrie) who's life was as action packed off screen as her characters.

Soap prequels and 'bubbles' have never worked before. I can't see why this one would be any different

Well that's just not true, is it?

Dot's story in EastEnders was fab - so why you would embolden the word, "never", I just don't know.

The ratings it got were cr*p, the reviews it got from critics were cr*p and the online reaction it got was cr*p. That's why i 'emolded' the word "never" Rolling Eyes

While the fact about soap "bubbles" being generally poor I do accept, the only one which was wonderfully executed was Dot's Story in EastEnders IMO.

What about Brookside's 'Damon and Debbie' ? - that proved popular in the ratings and was genuinally gripping and pushed the boundaries of soap drama at the time!

Damon and Debbie was definately a "classic" yes; possibly the "original and best" of all soap bubbles.

Well: no matter what it's like, it can only be better than late-night Hollyoaks! Rolling Eyes
