it reminded me of Elsie Tanner's final exit.

Yeah that's what i thought.

Yes Elsie left in a taxi late at night without telling anyone, minus the snow of course, it will be 21 years since she left the show on 4th January. Of course her return was ruled out by the death of the actress a few years later and the character herself later died off screen, but there is always a chance Suranne/Karen could return.

Anyway I read this on Digital Spy;

'Corrie' star lands drama deal
by Daniel Saney

Coronation Street actress Suranne Jones, who plays Karen MacDonald, has signed a £750,000 contract with Granada to take part in new drama projects.

Granada, anxious to keep the actress with the network after her departure from Corrie, have promised to turn her into the next Sarah Lancashire. They are now considering her as a potential lead for eight different drama projects, reports the News of the World.

A network insider said: "Suranne was brilliant as Karen McDonald. We were devastated when she wanted to leave Coronation Street.

"But she wants to stay with ITV so we've been working on projects that will suit her."

She will begin work on her first drama in January.

Just catching up on Christmas Corrie now on ITV2.

Its been great great great! Just a shame that these strong episodes have been shown over the festive period and only peaked at 11.3 million (being beaten by Eastenders by at least one million viewers!)

Especially liked the Christmas Day episodes - great to see nearly everyone shown (apart from Betty and Emily) and great to hear Fred Elliot read a sermon over shots of everyone else.

The Karen - Tracey fight was a bit OTT and reminiscent of Alexis Colby/Crystal Carrington! But fun anyway! Lets hope they dont go down that female rivalary line again!

ESSENTIAL VIEWING (even if i did have to wait for the ITV2 repeats!)

Goodbye Karen, you will be missed

Not by me she won't. She was a great character but the feud between her and Tracy has been drawn out for far too long. Hopefully we won't be seeing quite so much of Tracey next year either. Sarah Platt and the Battersby's need to take a bit of a step back too.

That was a great episode and a really nice ending, loved the fade at the end as we see the black cab drive off, well done Surrane Jones, for an amazing performance.

I agree, great ending, it reminded me of Elsie Tanner's final exit. And we got almost the full theme tune played at the end there, that was nice.

Goodbye Karen, you will be missed Crying or Very sad

Is this full theme available anywhere?

Couldn't agree more. I've not liked the overall storyline at all (as I said yesterday) but I am sorry to see Karen go because her and Steve used to be fantastic together, and yes, it was great to have the fuller version of the theme and the fade to black - a shame it was rudely interupted by that trailer for the next programme.

I hope they find a way back in for her one day.

I read somewhere(Sunday paper?), that Kate Ford & Simon Gregson will 'fade'/take a break from the storyline to recover, as they've put a fair bit of work in recently!

I wonder how they'll write Jimi Mistry out convincingly ?

I read in the paper today that they might bring back Mad Maya to kill of Dev if Jimmi doesnt recover from his problems.

LOL I wasnt expecting to see Jim either, they kept that quiet.

Nice to see Bev back in the show again too! I really hate Charlie now, what a ******* he is to poor Shelly.

Kate Ford 'quits' the Street
Tuesday, December 28 2004

Kate Ford has decided to quit Coronation Street to pursue a movie career, the Daily Star claims today.

The actress, who plays superbitch Tracy Barlow, is apparently planning to leave the ITV soap in the New Year. If true, the news will be a second devastating blow following the high-profile departure of Suranne Jones over Christmas.

Ford signed a new, one-year contract in October, announcing at the time that it would be her last. Her impending resignation would see her released from said contract ahead of time.

"Kate always joined the street as a stepping stone," a 'friend' told the newspaper. "She is tremendously talented and has many aspirations in showbiz. She has witnessed how Anna Friel walked out of Brookside and hasn't looked back."
