First of all it was free of charge then as product placment wasn’t allowed.

Secondly how could they force these brands, one I’ve never heard and assume doesn’t exist in the UK pay?

There is loads of Product Placement going on in Classic Corrie every afternoon. Trebor, Walls ice-cream, Maltesers and Mighty White bread feature prominently in the background in Alf's Corner Shop and The Kabin. I assume this advertising is now being provided free of charge as these are 30 year old episodes?

Aside from it being a 30 year old episode of a TV show where no such rules existed, it's not product placement anyway if products haven't been 'placed' in return for payment.

Ofcom definition: 'Product placement is when a company pays a TV channel or a programme-maker to include its products or brands in a programme'

Anything else that appears in a TV show that hasn't been 'placed' is just a prop.

Which one's that?? They're all well-known brands, no made-up stuff here. One may have ceased trading.

Didn't they used to have a separate 'Rovers set" solely for the use of the tours, which was much larger than the actual set? That allowed for the visitors to take pictures etc.

The Granada Studios Tours had an actual pub which was larger than the set. In fact it was so huge it barely resembled it on the inside. They used to use it sometimes when the likes of GMTV would interview a Corrie star down the line, and it was hired out for corporate events. I've got a vague memory of there being a Woolpack built on as an extension at some point, but I may be wrong.

The Tours also had a mini studio where you could take part in a scene using very dodgy green screen.

And at one stage you could walk into the Rovers on the actual lot and buy (I think!) photo keyrings and such like. They had a counter inside fashioned in the style of the bar, but obviously a lot smaller. I think this made an appearance briefly in the 40th Anniversary live show.

I did one of those videos at the Granada tours as well. It was in 1994 and I was 13. I still have the video somewhere. It had changed from the 1970s/80s credits to the new 1990s credits. It was the same video though with Ivy, Betty and Mike. I think they charged £10. Bet it would be about £25 or so now! It was a great day out and so amazing to set foot on the Corrie set. Ive got mixed views about the current set, I want to visit but also I know it wont feel the same as visiting the quay street set. Lots of history there. Plus the price puts me off even more. I will see what happens. They had 2 Corrie shops selling Videos, books etc on the Granada tours. One was in what is the medical centre now. The other was in the bonded warehouse. They also had Sooty and Co shop as part of the Granada tour and the outside scenes for the show were recorded there, assume on Mondays when the tour was closed. Same for Corrie outside filming. Now of course Corrie needs the set 5 days a week and some weekends the pace of filming these days.

Going back to the ITV3 Corrie, hard to believe we are coming to the end of 1988 already. Ive enjoyed `1988 quite a lot. Its a year ive never really paid much attention to really, Hilda and so many other old faves had gone, but its been great in the main. Of course 1989 is a big year for Corrie and I think we have some of the best Corrie ever coming up in these episodes. It continues into the early 1990s as well with a strong few years of episodes from 1990-1992.

I saw the last few months of 1988 when they were on Granada Plus back in 2001, but it's a long time ago and I can barely remember it, so what I'm seeing feels mostly new to me again. I wonder if ITV3 will pass the February 1994 point where Granada Plus went off air.

A scary thought too is that 2001 is further back now than 1988 was when Granada Plus were showing these episodes...

The Sooty & Co exterior was just a facade they used to throw up at the side of the Bonded Warehouse (just down from the Rovers replica actually - you can see it in the background of some scenes). I seem to remember a Sooty Shop around the corner on the USA strip which had its own entrance but in actual fact shared the Granada Shop.

In later series they used an actual shop unit in Prestwich.

Indeed - the unit they used (now Woof and Tumble pet shop) was next door to La Contadina (now the Bombay Cuisine Takeaway) which at the time was used for exterior filming of Jim’s Cafe/Roy’s Rolls prior to its move onto the new Victoria Street at Granada’s backlot.

The exterior which in no way matched the interior sets- with the entrance on the front, rather than down a side alley shared with The Kabin.

I barely remember much from 1988 from the Granada Plus repeats and watched them all from Mid 1977 (Mid 1997 on Granada plus) until they ended with Feb 1994. I remember more from the original airings of Corrie back in 1989 than I do from the Granada Plus airings. This was the year I started to watch Corrie properly, aged 7 years old. It was exciting when we were told in school there would be an extra episode on Friday evening. 3 episodes a week was about right IMO. Its overkill now with 6.

it will be interesting to see how far they go with the repeats. I cant really see them going back to the 1970s/early 1980s, I guess they will just continue into the 90s.

Yes sorry I should have said the outside façade rather than the shop itself. I seem to remember there being a Sooty show further down the site near where the arches to the 1970s Corrie set were.

I'm sure you went into the medical centre and they had a video wall with a turntable that moved you around to see different clips of Corrie?

I think that was from the days when it was more of a tour than a theme park, and the street was the climax to the tour.

If memory serves me right you'd do all the indoor bits, then go through Baker Street on a tram and get stopped at Checkpoint Charlie and have to get off, then into the "medical centre" building where you were seated. The turntable started facing a replica of the original 1960 Rovers interior and slowly revolved while a video played, then once it had revolved 180 degrees, shutters lifted and you were on the street set.

Eventually, the street set was dropped from the tour and became a separate attraction as did Baker Street. The climax to the tour became the interior Corrie sets.

Cheers I don't remember a lot as I was only very young at the time, hence why I went back when it reopened after they moved to Salford.
