Coronation Street

Costa & Coop p68: Repeats on ITV3: Is there too many spoilers?

Yes a shame Jack and Vera weren’t included much, but then again their relationship was pretty similar to Stan and Hilda, even down to trying to better themselves, the dodgy home improvements they made, and the constant bickering, so I imagine they didn’t want to tell two similar stories and instead feature 4 completely different ones.

Yes I expect that is the reason. Jack and Vera were basically Stan and Hilda Mark 2 although they always seemed just as good as Stan and Hilda and never felt like a replacement. The main difference was that Vera died first and left Jack on his own whilst it was Stan that died. But Liz Dawn and Bill Tarmey both made the parts their own and it never felt like they were a weak replacement for 2 legends.

Do you feel ITV should reintroduce a pandemic warning slide before Coronation Street starts instructing viewers to "Wear a Face Mask in all shops"? As Corrie cannot accurately portray the current Covid-19 guidelines as has been mentioned above, seeing characters walk into The Kabin without a mask, may cause confusion.

I understand for the vast majority of viewers, it wouldn't, but it surely must be considered?

Nope.

Just out of interest. Did they ever confirm onscreen the passing of Hilda Ogden after Jean Alexander died in 2016? I know they dedicated an episode to Jean Alexander but I don’t remember them mentioning it on the programme.

I stopped watching in 2018 so I may have missed something as I recall someone saying something would be done.

I don’t think there has been any reference to Hilda passing away... but same with some other previous characters where the actor has since passed away eg Percy Sugden/Maud Grimes/Phyllis Pearce. I’m not sure Bill Webster has been referenced as being passed either.

I suppose once an actor leaves it’s very much up to writers on if they want to refer to a previous character and some writers may think referring to a character who hasn’t been on screen since 1987 would have little storyline impact as only a handful of characters would know them. In Hilda’s case, probably Kevin/Sally/Gail/Audrey/Ken/Rita/Tracey/Nick?/Peter?/Jenny?? are the only ones who would have known/met Hilda.

There has been no mention of Hilda passing away - I guess I just meant that Stan died leaving Hilda alone but it was the other way around for Jack and Vera as Vera died and then Jack died later. I don't think there is always a need to mention when a past character has passed away just for the sake of mentioning it when the actor has passed away. Recent examples include Annie Sugden and Betty Eagleton in Emmerdale, the actresses have both recently passed away sadly however as far as we know Annie is in Spain and Betty is in Australia. To be fair they wouldn't have had much chance to write in Betty's death yet.

As far as we know Hilda is still living in Derbyshire as housekeeper to Dr Lowther however its a possibility given her age she might have passed away as the character would be 96 now. I don't think Percy and Phyllis got on screen deaths despite the actors playing them passing away. Elsie only did years later as Dennis returned to the show and Rita asked about Elsie. I guess if Irma or Trevor returned Hilda would be mentioned but I cant see either returning. Then again Dennis did after over a 40 year absence.

Nick would have been very young when Hilda left and Peter was in and out of the show over several years played by different actors. Jenny would have known Hilda from 1986-1987.

Yes and she made a lovely reference to her in episode 10,000 while talking to Rita, who was busy sorting out the pub before opening: "Put down your dishcloth, Hilda" Laughing

Great they managed to do a big nostalgia fest for the 10,000th, especially with the 60th celebrations sort of up in the air.

There was talk Hilda's death would be worked into a script after Jean Alexander passed away. One option and possibly the most sensible was Kevin and Sally being informed. While Gail, Audrey, Ken, Rita and Jenny would have known Hilda, none were close to her like Kevin. Hilda was probably on Christmas card terms with him and Sally.

A small tribute would have been nice and Corrie usually does a good job of making nods to the past. It wouldn't make sense to have it overshadow events because she was only known by a handful of the current cast. Part of the problem with references to characters from yesteryear is it doesn't always seem genuine and it's just there to reward the viewer. Having someone like Bet return would be challenging because the writers would probably have her share a scene with Gemma or Sean who would act all starstruck, probably because the actors know her as 'Bet Lynch' when Corrie was three nights a week, and not the landlady.

If the producers decide they want to include the passing of Hilda Ogden, and they want to work it in to modern day Corrie, I could imagine a scene where Sally has received a letter or e-mail from Dr Lowther's son/daughter or grandson/daughter to say that Hilda has passed away, and we'd see a scene where Sally would go to the garage and tell Kevin the sad news.

Later in the episode there'd be a scene with Kevin and Sally reminiscing the memories of their time lodging with Hilda at No. 13, and another scene where Sally would pass on the news to Rita.
"The Not-So-Late-Show with Greg Mitchell" will hopefully return in some form, somewhere soon.
Unlikely to be on Roch Valley Radio though.

Stay tuned . . .

I won't say much but in terms of Geoff are we really going down another Phelan route of it all? What are the writers/producers thinking on this one? (it was on one of those soap/tv guides I seen in the shops today), call about dragging it out even more....

Or are we going with a weird theory here: He gets thrown in jail with her (slow claps)....

Could they just hurry up and get it over with, switch Yasmeen and put him in jail! (sorry small rant)

That was a great episode and im glad Corrie managed to do something special but not over the top with big stunts etc. It worked for the tram crash having a big stunt but I don't think they could top that.

I liked the mention of Hilda. There was also a mention in a recent Classic Corrie episode (1996) when Mike walked into his flat and Alma was there with rollers in her hair and Mike said 'I thought you were Hilda Ogden'. Of course Hilda used to work for Mike in the 80s as a cleaner.

As usual the tv guides exaggerate with the headline and put a photo of Geoff and Sally on the cover.... I will put the next bit in spoiler tags

but it isn't Sally they are talking about in the spoilers! They put a photo of Geoff and Sally on the cover to make it seem like he does something to Sally. But it is actually Tim's mum they are talking about. A bit like when Hillman killed his ex wife and they put a photo of Gail and Hillman on the cover of the tv magazines with the headline 'Richard Kills' to make it sound like he killed Gail!
