We didnt spend £600 on a TV 3 years ago to have nasty black bars on the top and bottom, or picture cut off the sides. Im pretty sure most 4:3 viewers aggree. Anyway, 4:3 is still the international standard, and most viewers (just under 75%) still have 4:3 sets, so its fair for them that programmes should be made in 4:3.

The reason that Emmerdale and Coronation Street are not in widescreen is that the exterior sets are MUCH smaller that real life. This would be much more noticable in widescreen, but special effects will be used to make the set look bigger, even in widescreen.
