Dont diss the music! Its great! The titles need refreshing. Apart from a few tweaks in the mid-90s and a change in font in mid-1999 its been the same sequence for over 11 years. Lets hope they ditch those ECP credits.
One thing though- Im glad its stayed 4:3 so long. There is too much widescreen when so few people have widescreen sets. Its been a bit of relief to us 4:3 viewers who hate them black bars.
No, it won't look that bad, not many people have a widescreen TV over here either! The result on a normal TV is small black bars at the top and bottom of the TV.
In my case its 25% less picture at the sides. its much better than black bars. Even if you do get more picture, the black bars are an eyesore and distract your atention. The only attractive way of seeing 16:9 is by getting a 16:9 set- something we wont be geting for a while.

But surely james, when something is filmed in 16:9 then you are gaining additional picture at either side from the traditional 4:3 format. Therefore if you have digital and you set it to 4:3 mode without letterbox then you are still seeing exactly the same picture as you would have done before as you've effectively deleted the new bits on the side?

The [/i]Miniature Heroes[/i] version of the Cadbury's sponsorship bits starts looking like 14:9, then at the end the fake black bars sweep away just as that giant chocolate hand grabs the globe.
this use of a 14:9 look drew my attention to the fact that the programme itself is still in 4:3 (I hadn't consciously thought about it before, but was probably subliminally aware of it).
It's about bloody time Corrie went widescreen. (BTW in case you hadn't guessed, my telly is widescreen)
Emmerdale also draws attention to the fact that it ain't widescreen yet - because those bits of black with monochrome shots of people who aren't even part of the cast (which is incredibly stupid) are approximately 16:9 looking. All very strange.

Yeah, these days I find myself watching BBC One and Two on Sky Digi, in 4:3 format. It might go off the edge by a centimetre but that's hardly noticable when you're sitting right back. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif
And it's about time Coronation Street came out of 4:3 and into widescreen, another big change to hit the soap. How it's changed over the past 41 years...

I seem to remember reading that Corrie bosses have given permission for a radical change to the titles, which may even include a change to the music. I doubt that this would be popular however, remember when EastEnders tried to changed their music to something which wouldn't sound out of place in a lift? But the titles are dull and need a change. I mean, that poor cat is dead now! Surely it is bad taste to leave it on! Sorry, I like cats. Except short ginger scouse ones, that is.

That Miniture heroes advert has been used since at least 1999. I found an episdode of Corrie from october 1999 on video and it used that same (14:9 look) Miniture heroes advert.
One thing I dont get is people with widescreen TVs think that everything should be widescreen to suit their needs, and people with 4:3 sets wnat less widescreen. Basically, I think the widescreen/4:3 ratio of programmes should remain stable till at least 50% have a 16:9 set. Im glad that the Coronation Street and Emmerdale bosses kept them 4:3 for so long. Its been nice beign able to watch a programme without having to cut the sides off or stare at black bars. And it being 4:3 hasnt made it any less dramatic has it?

I have a widescreen TV, and yes, to be honest i do want as many programmes to be in widescreen as possible http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/cheesy.gif
I don't have a new widescreen TV to only watch 4:3 stuff on it with black at left and right!
Coronation St is a big programme that stands out in the scedules at the moment as being only in 4:3. At night, when watching the 'main programmes' its a pain seeing the tv go into 4:3 mode for it, then the ads come on, or another widescreen programme, and its much better.
It shouldn't affect any digital viewers if its made in widescreen as they should make sure everything important is framed for 4:3 centre cut-out viewers.
