I watched it over the weekend, and agree it was absolutely brilliant. Wonderfully acted, perfectly cast... oh heck, everyone's said it all already! Even my other half who isn't a Corrie fan absolutely loved it.

One thing I didn't realise was that they'd recorded pilot episodes. Does anyone know if they're still in existence?

From what I could see when they showed the Florizel Street clip, the titles looked to have been recreated. Granada must be one of only a few companies who have alot of their archive still available, so I guess it would have probably been shown by now.

Yes - although every episode still exists in one form or another, the dry runs (unfortunately) do not. A few photographs do remain though; there's a very weird one in which Ena, Minnie and Martha are portrayed by completely different actresses. Quite uneasy on the eye! Doris Hare played Martha but I forget the other two (neither of them were Nita Valerie - though of course she was one of the original Enas). I haven't seen any other photos of the dry run cast but it'd be good if these are released at some point.

I also loved the "From the North" frontcap tribute at the start of the programme. Quite sad that they couldn't have inserted the accompanying endcap before the "ITV Studios" one!

You mean this one

Apparently Anthony Cotton's mother played Agnes the cleaner.

Enid Dunn: I think she appeared in Coro as a cameo role a while back, she had a recurrent role in Phoenix Nights too. Her maiden name was Cotton, hence Anthony's stage-name. Useless fact for you :lol

Well for once I was in the right place at the right time.

I was actually back in the UK visiting family in Bolton and Salford!

It has to be the best piece of television for a long while (well at least since the early 80's i.e. Granada's high-class dramas such as Brideshead Revisited).

Congratulations on Granada (definitely Granada and NOT ITV Studios this peice of history) for making it and congratulations on BBC for showing it. The Bernsteins et al will be looking down and smiling Very Happy

Also congratulations go to Coronation Street for the special award and becoming the WORLDS longest running scripted television drama

No - it's been stretched sideways to make Gail Platt look more like E.T. than usual.

LOL I mean the background, isn't the builders yard there? Though I now realise that it's just the camera angle lol, it just seemed weird seeing it from that angle

ITV.com just published this fantastic montage to kick start the 50th

Some intresting bits from the 50th press launch today.

Quote:
....And producer Phil Collinson said a special live episode could include computer-generated images, which has never been attempted before. He added that viewers can expect to see "a tram crash, a death, a wedding, another death, a birth, a murder, a fire and another death" as part of the milestone celebrations.http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5huzgYAt0Nz43MmnwHV83dQqJqNZg

Sounds intresting to have CGI in the live episode.

Quote:
Producers have also teased the secretive tram crash storyline by releasing the following details.

“As we head towards anniversary week secrets and lies cloud the cobbles; Molly’s baby secret, Nick and Leanne’s affair, Carla’s growing obsession with Peter, Becky and Steve’s desperate bid for a child and John Stape’s double life. The drama multiplies and as these storylines reach a shocking climax secrets refuse to stay buried and lies are exposed.

“When a tram then comes crashing off the viaduct it’s the web of deceit these characters have weaved that will see the fabric of the street changed forever, as relationships are broken and some of the show’s most loved residents stare death in the face!” http://www.how-do.co.uk/north-west-media-news/north-west-broadcasting/huge-street-party-kicks-off-50th-celebrations-for-coronation-street-201009249164/

When looking at it like that, its no wonder they want to reduce the cast. I never realized it was quite so large!
