But there's still the fact the set has to go around the bonded warehouse, and the high rises nearby (Beetham Tower namely) makes camera work constrictive

I think the set should remain where it is for the time being. That said, I think expanding it would be a great idea, and if that means relocating the backlot to MediaCity or whatever, then so be it - but, they'd have to do a fantastic job of recreating it. If any possible set move occurred, would they build a whole new street complete with reclaimed Salford brick and continue to use the old one until the new one was ready (which is what happened in 1982), or would the whole thing be moved over to MediaCity...? They'll need to make it look authentic as possible - it needs to look like it was built in 1902 (the Rovers/houses side, anyway). It'd be great to see some of the streets mentioned over the years but never seen - Mawdsley Street (as already mentioned), Crimea Street, more of Victoria Street, etc.

On a related note, I wonder how they'll accommodate the viaduct not being there after it collapses (again! Laughing ) There'll obviously be nothing there in the time between the rubble being cleared and the new viaduct (if there is to be one...) being constructed, so will Jubilee Terrace and all the other streets be CGI'd in for all episodes shot on the exterior set? Will be interesting to see. I wonder if we'll get any warning in the weeks leading up to the tram crash - sound effects of it creaking or whatever.

Going slightly off topic: I never manage to see the omnibus editions over the weekends, but can anyone tell me if the closing music used on the omnibuses is longer than the version used on weekday episodes, or do the many names just flash by very quickly?

(I'm still confused as to why they left out a whole chunk of the closing music when they re-recorded the theme. It sounds really abrupt going from the part we normally hear as the opening, straight into "da-da-da-da-DAA"! I've got used to the re-recorded themes by now, but the coronet/trumpet doesn't really sound as good as it should.)

I'm wondering about the whole viaduct thing too, I can't see how they will do it xD

Set construction has developed a fair bit since 1982. Its not uncommon to take moulds and castings of authentic things to replicate textures and designs - so they could potentially create a copy of the façade of the existing street - and you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference.

Or of course they could do it the old fashioned way and build it out of old bricks like they did in 1982.

As to the viaduct - when did you last see a construction site that wasn't wrapped in scaffold? You'll not see anything for weeks while its covered over - much less other streets beyond.

That's my guess, anyway.

When did you last see a major accident involving a structure collapsing only to be covered in scaffold the day after, being rebuilt?

I didn't say the day after. I was following on from the above and what we talked about this earlier in the thread, where I'd suggested that, (if they were using CGI), that they could shoot a week's worth of master shots showing the damaged viaduct and beyond, and then by the start of the next week they would have it all wrapped up in scaffold (much like the Queen Vic appears on the webcams at the moment).

My suggestion being that there would be a finite amount of effect shots needed, planned for, shot and processed to be spread across a week - and then nowt else.

Sorry I didn't make that more clear.

some interesting history of the corry set looking at old maps the more detailed maps show the bonded warehouse with the buildings behind which are now the medical centre, there are train tracks running paralel to this building which shows it must have originally been a loading area for the warehouse from the rail line

the map also shows the granada studios built over two canal basins

thanks for mentioning the EE webcams Gavin, been waiting for them to come back online, they are a lot better than the old ones

That would make sense. I thought you meant there'd be no need for anything because there'd be scaffolding immediately Smile

I wonder if construction of the new part of Victoria Street has begun yet? I'd ask David Nugent but I recently sent an email asking why the building site suddenly appeared across from the butchers (apparently its part of the building yard), so I don't want to bug him again so soon xD

Yes im going to see it! Looking forward to it.

As for the omnibus I caught the end of it and the music did seem longer in order to accommodate the extra credits etc.

I've often wondered what that part was meant to be, apart from the external access to the flat where Maria and Charlie / Tracey lived

yell.com has got aerial images of Manchester from this year as the boat is outside Gail's, you can do a clever
3D with it, they also have a different street view from google
