A question for our older viewers.

Was Len Fairclough mentioned much before his demise off screen back in 1983?

From I can remember (being 13 at the time) he was sent off to work away (Blackpool I believe) and sometimes Mavis would ask Rita about him. Then they killed him off in a motorway van crash which is when Rita learned that he was having an affair.

Anyone else notice the mention of Kevin Webster last night? Filmed before the charge?

It's Michael Lavelle, not Kevin Webster, who is standing trial. There's no reason why they can't mention him - if anything it would be odd if they didn't. Digital Spy were reporting that Kevin may head off to look after a sick Bill Webster to explain his absence.

If you want to be pedantic, it's Le Vell, not Lavelle and his real name is actually Michael Turner.

Oh yes, because that makes my point less valid...

We knew who TVN was on about so was there really a need to be so big headed?

Have you read my point? TVN was suggesting because there was a mention of Kevin Webster it must have been filmed before the charge, which is why I pointed out that if anything I'd have expected more mentions of him off-screen. My point wasn't that the actor's name isn't Kevin.... Rolling Eyes

That's what I thought your point was and why I replied as I did. I've re-read it knowing what you were getting at and it makes sense.

I am too young to remember it first time around being about 2 at the time lol, but from watching the episodes larer I seem to remember Rita mentioned him now and again and yes he was working away somewhere and travelling back to attend Stan and Hilda's ruby wedding party with Rita when he crashed and was killed. They didnt even show the police telling Rita that he had been killed, she was just asked to go into the back room of the Rovers and Betty went with her and Betty came and told Bet and Fred that Len had died.

He was actually axed for selling his story to the press I think, nothing to do with the charges. It was a shame as I liked Len and Rita as a couple and he had been there since almost the start of Corrie. We also lost Doris Speed, Pat Phoenix and Jack Howarth all within a year after Len left the show which left only Bill Roache from the original cast (unless you could Eileen Derbyshire as well, she like Len was not in it from day one but very early on)

So if it has been done in the past, what was so different with Les Battersby in that we're supposed to believe he randomly went on tour with Status Quo....?

I suppose it just depends how they want to write the character out. Len was in the show for 22 years and i guess they needed to give him a final ending and killing him off was the easiest option.

It also meant they brought in Alan Bradley (storyline for Rita) a few years later which IMO is one of the best storylines Corrie had ever had even to this day!

Yes I have to agree with you on that one, Alan Bradley was brilliant, he had a touch of Len about him but then he was ruthless, a liar and a cheat! One of the best characters of the Street I think.

Didn't poor old Dot Cotton also suffer a similar mishap some time ago on EE?

Seems like a silly filler storyline to me.
