Oddly, looking at the programme numbers, the series seem to run by calendar year rather than November-to-November, as you'd expect for Corrie.
Holby City & Casualty also have series numbers, although they do take a two week break at some point during the year.

at a guess 1960/1961 is series 1 so 2012/2013 would be series 53 and we'd be at the start of it,
if it was series 1 in 1960, 2 in 1961, etc then 2012 would series 53 and we would be at the end of it
found a website with a guide to all the brookside episodes on and thats broken into seasons, 70 of varying lengths, which is odd for a UK soap

T'was my fumbling fingers that caused the error.
However, it seems Sky's guide isn't immune to bad episode numbering either . . .
Hour long episodes have previously missed a number (53/240 in this example from 02/12/12). Yet 241 is also missing, but there are two episodes labelled as 242.
I seem to recall from Sky's 'Beta Trial', that we asked for soaps to be listed by broadcast date rather than episode, as this made it easier to choose a specific programme. Series/Episode numbers don't make much sense to 'Joe Public'.

This seemed more important on DEMAND5, where they just have episode numbers for soaps. However, I can't show an example as Channel 5 don't show H&A or Neighbours over Xmas/NY.
Their 'Soap' option is even missing from Catch-up . . .
