The Sun admits publishing false story
Quote:

The Sun has owned up to what I guess we in the journalism trade realised the moment we saw it - its splash about the pre-Christmas live episode Coronation Street being targeted by al-Qaeda was false.

On 9 December, it carried this front page story (which still appears on its website, incidentally) claiming that "cops" were "throwing a ring of steel" around the studios in Manchester after being "tipped off" that the show "could be hit by a terror strike."

It had that familiar Daily Star-ish ring of complete nonsense, and so it turns out, as yesterday's page 2 "correction" admits: "Further to our article about increased security at Coronation Street's studios for their live 50th anniversary episode... we would like to make clear that while cast and crew were subject to full body searches, there was no specific threat from Al-Qaeda as we reported. We apologise for the misunderstanding and are happy to set the record straight."

"Misunderstanding"?

God almighty. How are their bare faced lies written off as a misunderstanding?

I quite agree, make something up which is complete bovine excrament, publish it, then when the people concerned say it's a lie say no it's a misunderstanding Rolling Eyes

I've decided the Pope loves McDonalds, oh he doesn't, sorry it's a misunderstanding Confused

the Sun would say the world is triangular if it sold their paper, the fact it's cheaper than the Beano says it all really

And as usual the press get away with an apology of their choice hidden away inside the paper. Completely off-topic but I think any apology should be printed on the page where the story appeared and for any front page story which is found to be misleading the press should be fined in relation to the sales they made that day.

I just find it so frustrating time and time again the press get away with all this rubbish and it usually passes by very quietly, yet much smaller incidents occurring on TV are punished far more severely and the print media have a field day with them. Indeed I'm doubting their "apology" is accurate too - can't really see that the whole cast and crew were subject to "full body searches."

putting into perspective when they have a police cordon around a live Elton John concert would they give Sir Elton a full body search Rolling Eyes

bearing in mind the core audience of the Sun is those sad male humans who haven't got to grips with the fact that all post pubic females have tits they don't have to aim that high for a front page article which is true because the audience will believe it anyway

Mabye product placement? Obviously they can't do it on TV till Feb, but I know there've always been allowed to do it on film's. So a DVD is proberbly no different.

That or it's just a accident! Laughing
