How were the scrolling credits done in the first episode of coronation street? I noticed they went a little wonky as they reached the top of the screen.

I'm not really an avid Corrie watcher, but I tuned into both episodes. I would have thought they'd script these two episodes with the presumption that it could catch a raft of new viewers, but as an 'outsider' to the storylines, I found it difficult to get into it because I didn't know any of the backstory; at least with the Eastenders live episode this year, they pretty much spelled out what had gone on in previous episodes.
Frankly, it's a bit absurd that you expected to understand the storyline, it's a continuing drama. The episode not only saw the explosion and the tram crash, but the 'climax' of 3 other stories.
The episode wasn't aimed at the casual viewer to see a few CGI effects, but at those who invested in the show, and the characters for months / years before. Character / story development was rightfully at the centre of the episode.

To be fair Square Eyes you can easily follow most the soaps without watching them just from the TV guides thanks to the fact they really don't hold back on the spoilers.
Exactly - it is what it is and though my first thoughts on seeing the Tram driver were Harry Hill, it wasn't really an issue. Interesting bringing up the issue of HD - crisp, clearer pictures means they can't get away with things they used to be able too.
I thought it was pretty damned good myself. Lots of nice shots of debris falling - nice to see bricks and wood used as opposed to the usual 'fuller's earth' and rubber chips being basted out of air cannons you see in other soap explosions. Everything in the practical effects seemed to be impressively substantive. The bodies being flung back by the explosion was really violent - real gusto.
The CGI would have been more realistic (more forgiving) were the show shot in a filmic 24p way - but crisp HD video is always going to be tricky to make look real. I think there's a little too much unnecessary criticism going on in this thread - the actual tram shots were a few seconds out of a long and well directed sequence - and they weren't bad, they just weren't excellent. Loved the cut to the driver's face, and the reflections of the oncoming building.
And before all the usual eye-rolling suspects ask questions about whether the driver would have or should have seen an explosion up ahead - err, can we have a little suspension of disbelief please? It is a soap after all.

No I mean the actually first ever one, but the first one on monday night, was it live or not? because as I said before this morning said it was.
Quote:
Coronation Street used to be broadcast live across Granada, ATV and other pre-ITV stations, so the first-ever episode transmitted last night on ITV1 was a recording of the live original broadcast.

I'm sure I heard it too. About tonight's episode, much better than last night's CGI tram by far (one of the only times I found Corrie extremely interesting!)
Standard opening titles tonight, but an aerial shot of the other side of Weatherfield.
Am I imagining things, or did I hear a tram during Rita's first scene?

I missed the crash episode - does any kind soul happen to have an interlaced capture of the action, even in SD?
