Yes, the CGI on the tram, particularly the second carriage, wasn't brilliant.

What in the name of goodness was the sound it made? It sounded like a roar. Honestly, it had a sort of Jurassic Park feel to it, the roaring noise and the smashing up of the shop (which is unlikely to have happened in a real crash) as others have said.

I was thinking it sounded like a dinosaur as well actually.

Some overnight ratings for last night:

7.30pm - 11.18m ( non HD)
6.49m for orginal episode ( Non HD)

Then the second episode of Coronation Street averaged 13.16m (46.3%) across ITV1/ITV1 HD, peaking at 14.6m.
That's Corrie's best overnight rating since 2005. Plus it should be higher than that when the official's come out.

Plus - ITV2 - Corrie Uncovered - 1.04m

I would still like to know what caused that explosion,

* Gas?
* Bomb?
* Beer pump backing up?
* Someone lighting some beer, and it spreads and blow up?
* Someone farting near a lighter, and with all the fumes in air it was a chain reaction?>

Ciaran said last night that there was no food due to problems with the gas. I think that's the answer, for now.

Eeew. Why would she do that? Did her eyes fall out?

Alan Henshaw actually made a comment along those lines on Corrie Live last night on ITV2.

The CGI didn't look too bad on ITV1 SD, although the rear end of the carriage made everyone in my house laugh. If they'd cut into that sequence about 5 frames later and got rid of the tram kicking its rear end up like a dinosaur, it would have been much better. They could even have slowed the second bit down, and had it balancing dangerously, before finally giving in to gravity and taking out the Kabin.

I would still like to know what caused that explosion

Well you'll find out, won't you. We all will.
Its not usual to find out these things minutes after, now is it?

I'm not really an avid Corrie watcher, but I tuned into both episodes. I would have thought they'd script these two episodes with the presumption that it could catch a raft of new viewers, but as an 'outsider' to the storylines, I found it difficult to get into it because I didn't know any of the backstory; at least with the Eastenders live episode this year, they pretty much spelled out what had gone on in previous episodes.

Likewise there wasn't the remotest hint of the oncoming explosion, and in a packed bar surely somebody would have noticed the smell of gas.

I think it would have been more believable if the club had been blown up on purpose, whilst empty, as part of an insurance scam - and the owners think they've got away with it and not injured anybody, when suddenly there's a massive tram crash.

Coronation Street used to be broadcast live across Granada, ATV and other pre-ITV stations, so the first-ever episode transmitted last night on ITV1 was a recording of the live original broadcast.

Last night's 2010 episodes were recorded back in October as was said in the Corrie Live thing on ITV2.

I think the 3rd Feb 1961 episode was the last one to be transmitted live. The Friday episode was live and the Wednesday episode was recorded 15 minutes afterwards. Also 07/01/2002 was the first time Coronation Street was broadcast in 16:9.

The gas didn't leak, at least not out of the cooker, Keiran mentioned the gas pressure was up and down, so the pressure would have built up then KABOOM, if only Nick wasn't so preoccupied Laughing

Very possibly the highest rated episode since Tracy Barlow's wedding in 2004, once the final figures come in.

Will take a hell of an episode to beat the 19 million who watched the peak of the Richard Hillman storyline though!
