What in the name of goodness was the sound it made? It sounded like a roar. Honestly, it had a sort of Jurassic Park feel to it, the roaring noise and the smashing up of the shop (which is unlikely to have happened in a real crash) as others have said.
Can someone explain why there was a character dialling 999 before the incident?
The character had just bludgeoned someone to death with a hammer after she threatened to blow the gaff on his affair.
Wasn't so much the 'affair' was it, but the fact that they'd hidden Colin Fishwick's body.
For anyone viewing tonight as a one off I can see how all that might have been confusing
Indeed, thanks for that. Even if it was explained in tonight's episodes, I was only really watching for the big climax so wouldn't have worked out the plot
We hear that an RTC is causing traffic congestion and leading to the emergency services being delayed - which of course will add to the drama and lead to 'heroic' efforts by street residents trying to rescue each other. Surely there's not just one route into that area of Weatherfield though!
I'm idly wondering if this unrelated accident will actually involve another street resident, and may be the cause of the fourth 'shock' death? Probably not, but it could be an unexpected 'reveal' at the end of the week.
Yes, the CGI on the tram, particularly the second carriage, wasn't brilliant.

I've seen better accidents on Casualty, and that's saying something.
Yes, I think if you take the sound away from the second part of the tram, the whole thing is much more plausible.
So the Corrie obsessives on here not keen on it, surprising. Before yesterday I didn't think I'd like it but i thought it was OK. It makes me think should they have just stuck with Molly's reveal and Websters finding out for the big 50 storyline along with Stape murdering Charlotte. The big crash like last night is just not Corrie.
I believed the episodes were very good on the first viewing (considering I have never watched Coronation Street before), although the rear carraige would have never had done
that
. However after reviewing that scene this morning I cannot believe how terrible the effects were. Surely the driver should have seen the explosion or at least have heard it, he shouldn't be working for Metrolink if he cannot pay attention to the job in hand. Anyway below is how I believe the tram should have 'landed'.
I thought it was pretty damned good myself. Lots of nice shots of debris falling - nice to see bricks and wood used as opposed to the usual 'fuller's earth' and rubber chips being basted out of air cannons you see in other soap explosions. Everything in the practical effects seemed to be impressively substantive. The bodies being flung back by the explosion was really violent - real gusto.
The CGI would have been more realistic (more forgiving) were the show shot in a filmic 24p way - but crisp HD video is always going to be tricky to make look real. I think there's a little too much unnecessary criticism going on in this thread - the actual tram shots were a few seconds out of a long and well directed sequence - and they weren't bad, they just weren't excellent. Loved the cut to the driver's face, and the reflections of the oncoming building.
And before all the usual eye-rolling suspects ask questions about whether the driver would have or should have seen an explosion up ahead - err, can we have a little suspension of disbelief please? It is a soap after all.

I would still like to know what caused that explosion,
* Gas?
* Bomb?
* Beer pump backing up?
* Someone lighting some beer, and it spreads and blow up?
* Someone farting near a lighter, and with all the fumes in air it was a chain reaction?>

Well you'll find out, won't you. We all will.
Its not usual to find out these things minutes after, now is it?
