Anyway, as for the tram crash, overall i don't think the effect worked for me. Despite being very well executed, it still looked like an 'effect' and so took away from the realism a show like Corrie normally portrays.

Whilst there was probably a need for some CGI I think they could have got away with less, which may have made it feel less like an effect.

What i really was impressed by was Graeme Harpers directing. Fantastic lighting, fantastic camera shots, fantastic tension building up by quick cutting. Very very well done!

Indeed, a good build up to the explosion. As far as I recall managed to avoid using a cliché "can you smell gas" type line prior to the explosion.

Wow.

Why did Alistair Stewart not explain to the viewers where Weatherfield is? This was a national bulletin, wasn't it? Would viewers in the south know where Weatherfield is? How did that reporter not only get there so quickly but also manage to get live pictures out so soon?

There's been a few serial killers, fires and explosions in Weatherfield so I'm sure we've seen it on the news before. And that big Free Deirdre campaign got Blair's backing. Plus it's been in the papers for months so I'm surprised BBC News didn't have a crew there waiting as well.

No. I think she only wants to watch the live episode.

Great episodes tonight. Bit of Corrie nostalgia - one of my favourite scenes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKgiZlMiK6Y&feature=related

Yes; the quick switching between shots was more effective in building up to the explosion than signposting it so explicitly; I know Ciaran mentioned about the gas playing up in the kitchen during the first episode, but it sounded more like a natural and almost throwaway remark instead of being an OTT expression of impending doom.

The only think I noticed was the guy from Westlife (I don't normally watch) saying about the gas pressure going in the kitchen.

There did seem to be a lot of trams whizzing by (especially if you include the number of sound effects). I realise it's fictional, but the real evening tram service is every 12 or 15 minutes in the evening (depending on which line Weatherfield is on).

CGI was slightly laughable.

Tsk, Neil! Don't you know your boybands? He's from Boyzone not Westlife!

Sorry to correct, but Keith Duffy is from Boyzone.

EDIT: And Ashley B beat me to it!

The build up was fantastic - talk about tension!!

On the actual crash itself - I'm going ot reserve judgement until I've seen it again. As it all wen't so quick. I think the only thing that I definitely didn't like was the fact you saw the tram driver just before impact - just seemed funny to me.

Personally I think a maybe not 100% realistic looking crash was much better than a crash happening off screen (maybe with the camera fixed on the faces of horror of Ken etc) which is the other alternative.

I agree. I've not watched Corrie in years, but tuned in tonight to see the big event and whether or not they managed to pull it off and live up to the hype. It was an extremely ambitious scene for a soap, and I admire them for going all out and trying to visualise the whole thing as well as they possibly could, rather than copping out by relying on the imagination of the viewer to fill in gaps that they'd prefer to avoid attempting.

No, it wasn't perfect by any means, and yes, the visual effects were inferior compared with the quality of CGI that films and series with much larger budgets routinely employ, but it was still much more impressive to watch than seeing the Queen Vic burn down. Again.

Personally, I prefer to judge the episode on its broader aim of being a stand-out 'event' episode that managed to really wow its audience and put the characters that viewers know and love into a decent amount of peril, stress and difficulty through a reasonably believable (albeit somewhat contrived) situation. We can all pick holes in the details of the execution of bringing that event to life, but I commend the Corrie team for trying to do something so ambitious, and I think they did a pretty good job overall.
