It does look very nice (although it's postage stamped on the screen here for some reason). I'd imagine it would have been cleaned up and remastered for a previous showing, the 40th anniversary perhaps?

I'd imagine that was the last time that ITV showed something in black and white too

It was up until last month I should think, as I think that Take That doc was in B&W for "artistic purposes"

I'm sure they showed 'Some Like It Hot' when Tony Curtis died in September.

What do you mean, it is being shown in 4:3 isn't it? I have large black bars on the side.

It's not black bars, it looks to be bricks or tiles or something.

I have black bars, it's definitely not bricks.

Great to see the first episode (funny it was sponsored by Harvey's!)

It does look like bricks either side Laughing

Turn your contrast up a bit. It doesn't seem to be completely black. I think bricks is a good guess as to what it is.

Is this the first time this episode has been shown with audio description too?

When watching on a 4:3 TV the picture is really small with black bars at the top and bottom (because ITV1 is telling the television/box that it is a 16:9 picture) and also at the sides (because ITV1 are broadcasting black bars at the sides).

Yes, called 'postage stamping'

Looks like it was the 40th anniversary copy rebroadcast - the end board was the same.

No credit squeezing, but shame Miss Announcer Lady on the network couldn't hold her whist over the theme tune.

That Apple Beatles advert is B&W too I've just noticed

There's an interesting upload on the PP of the 1981 showing of the first episode (file 7718) - that one used an animated frontcap of the one seen today, and used the original ending music - the end theme today was replaced by a more modern recording, hence the long silence at the end.

Sad post of the week:
Rita mention Doreen tonight! Nice to know she hasn't been completely forgotten.

I wonder if they will show the first colour episode, I'm sure the did that for the 35th anniversary? Or perhaps Hilda leaving, since that's the highest-rating one.
