That overly tight kerning is to justify the 'D' which isn't actually a D. So 2002.

The end result is something that looks utterly awful.

The older logo wasn't so bad as the font was slightly wider, and more geometric, but by trying to replicate it in Reith, it turns out dreadful.

A lot of times when watching BBC News, they put up text which is part of someones press release or statement. I find that text to be a bit jagged.
