Finally, news most Sky Digital viewers have been waiting for over several years came about and was confirmed today...the Sky EPG is to undergo a major revamp and overhaul. As usual, Digital Spy was one of the first websites to break the news. D/S reports -

Sky is planning a huge revamp of its digital EPG later this year, according to a report in this week's Broadcast.

Paramount to the changes is an expansion in the number of genre categories from seven to fifteen.

The existing 'main menu' page of the EPG groups channels in the genres of Entertainment, Movies, Sports, News & Documentaries, Kids, Music & Radio and Specialist. Links are also provided to view listings for all channels, an A-Z programme guide and the Personal Planner / Sky+ menu.

Although the seven-category split was more than sufficient when Sky launched its digital service in 1998, the number of channels has exploded in recent years from an initial 140 to almost 500 by the end of 2004. As a result, an increasing number of channels have been launched into inappropriate categories - particularly in the 'entertainment' section - while an even larger number have found themselves hidden away in the depths of the guide.

Sky's solution is to more than double the number of categories to fifteen. In order to facilitate the changes, the main menu page will be split into two. Listed on the first page will be Entertainment, Lifestyle & Culture, Movies, Sports, News, Documentaries, Kids and Music, while the second page will house Radio, Shopping, Religion, International, Gaming & Dating, Specialist and Adult.

The assigned EPG numbers for most channels will also change, although the five terrestrial stations are guaranteed to keep their existing positions at the top of the guide.

Furthermore, Broadcast reports that Sky themselves will be assigning the channels to their new categories and EPG numbers. Broadcasters were notified of an initial decision today (March 31), although they are all being given an opportunity to modify channel content in time for a final review period in June.

"These enhancements are designed to improve navigability for viewers and to assist Sky to meet continued demand for EPG slots," said a Sky spokesperson. "Better signposting will help make it easier for viewers to find the programme and channels that they want to watch."

The new EPG structure will be rolled out to viewers "over a six week period" this autumn.

About time is all I can say. Mind you, from what this report states, I think it will be worth the wait. New genres, new background, layout, and EPG numbers, it will be transformed. For once, Sky Digital are going to place channels in suitable categories, I mean, come on should a channel like Sky Vegas Live ever have been on Entertainment? That, I suppose, will be shipping off to Gaming genre. Also, I wondered if BBC Four might be moved to Documentaries genre as this is a more factual channel than entertainment.

What's your reaction to this news?
Do you think it's time the EPG got an 'overhaul' or do you like it the way it is?
What's your general opinion?

It sounds good news, but I wonder will the rule that channels are not allowed to jump above others will still apply?

For example it would make sense for all UK News channels to be listed in order, but CNN and Bloomberg wouldn't agree to it, also in Shopping it would be better if all channels providing a live UK based service were together and infomercials together, grouping music genres so like The Hits is next to The Box etc would be better as well

Rolling Eyes Sky's EPG is perhaps one of the best pieces of techology software I've ever seen, with the possible exception of VideoPlus numbers. It's extremely easy to use and understand - I cannot understand how anyone finds it hard to use! Now - explaining to your parents how to tape something off a Freeview box .. now THAT'S hard to get across to them ... !

It isn't, Sky confirmed this yesterday. You can see it on Digital Spy at http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds20318.html and you know they hate April Fools jokes.

Yes, but the way I read it is that they're just playing around with the menu page, no inference that all the channel numbers are going to rejigged again.

Great if they do decide to do that, as it needs tidying up, but I imagine most broadcasters will start getting a bit uppity if they are constantly being moved around given the amount they spend on an EPG position in the first place, plus the cost of changing marketing, branding and so on..

In the meantime, I look forward to the promised red dot/subtitles/PIN protection update that is apparently imminent.

EDIT: Ah, having reread the original piece... Still, if they are going to change channel numbers, surely many will be in line for compensation?

Why would companies be in line for compensation.

As per guidance issued by Sky (http://media.corporate-ir.net/media_files/lse/bsy.uk/Novepg.pdf), Sky are allowed to move a channel to a different area/ EPG number if they believe a channel no longer fits into the genre of the EPG section they are in.

ISTR the original rumour was that the March/April update would introduce a few new features, with a major revamp to follow later in the year. This news seems to go along with that. So far though the minor update hasn't yet happened, although it was never expected to be completed til mid April, so there's still time yet (and there are reports of a last minute hitch which has delayed the rollout). I will though concede that it still could still be a wind-up.

Interestingly SkyDigiAndAsianDatingAdsOnline reports that the radio channels numbers will change to 4 digits later as part of the revamp. I wonder how this will affect the way we enter channel numbers generally. Will we have to press 0103 for ITV for example, or maybe a BBCi style 'enter number and press select' method will be used? If so, there's also the possibility that BBC1 could be on channel '1', ITV on '3' etc. which could make a lot of sense.

This would be better. I reckon more people would watch ITV News if it were closer to Sky and News 24 on the Sky EPG.

Instead, it's shoved over with Fox News and the sleep-inducing EuroNews Confused

501 - Sky News
507 - BBC News 24
509 - ITV News Channel
510 - CNBC
511 - BBC Parliament
513 - CNN
515 - EuroNews
520 - Bloomberg
525 - Fox News
527 - S4C~2

When I had Sky Digital for a time, the schedule was [and still is, by the looks of it] all over the place. But I would like to take over Equidem's thoughts on this matter by adopting this for Sky Digital:
500 - Sky News
501 - BBC News 24
502 - ITV News Channel
505 - CNN
508 - Fox News
512 - EuroNews
514 - The official sleep-inducing BBC Parliament channel
517 - CNBC Europe
518 - Bloomberg
521 - SC4-2 [this should be only for Welsh viewers, not for the English viewers].
