He was always the first choice of Sports presenter at Granada for many years aswell. Though he usually presents the Football on 105.4 Century FM (North West) these days.


Oh? I thought he left Century about 2 years ago. "The Legends" were doing Saturday afternoons on their own after he went. I left the region just over a year ago so it's possible he's since returned but that's the first I've heard of it.

Last time I saw him was presenting the Waterloo Cup on Sky Sports, but even that was about a year ago now.

Last thing he did to my knowledge was as compare on Ricky Tomlinson's theatre tour, followed by a World Cup nostalgia theatre tour with Jack Charlton et al during this year's tournament.


He did leave about 3 years ago, now!!! (this is the 3rd season of the Legends doing all the football on Century 105.4). Not heard of Elton since then.

Elton Welsby can be seen presenting the Waterloo Bowls Championships on Sky Sports this week. I'm watching him now, he's put on a bit of weight since his ITV days but he's doing a decent job.

According to the Daily Mirror this morning Gabby Logan has now 'defected' to the BBC Sport department!

Some excerps from the story:-

"Gabby Logan will defect to the BBC after being shunted aside at ITV Sport.
Beeb bosses believe the glamourous presenter will spice up their team of star faces as she takes on other sports as well as football.
One insider said,"She will be one of the main faces of BBC Sport alongside the likes of Sue Barker."
Others say Gabby cannot wait to quit ITV after Steve Rider took over as main anchor of its Champions League coverage.
One insder said,"Gabby felt sidelined by Steve Rider, so she is thrilled by the new offer ."

My favourite line in the Mirror story is:-

"They are especially keen to hire bright new faces as coverage expands with the introduction of high definition TV, and she fits the bill."

Who could blame her for going ?

ITV have really dropped the ball on this one, and I don' t know why they're looking to concentrate all their sports coverage around Steve Rider. He's very good at what he does, but just rather bland.

The ITV sports team is now old, male and middle aged.

I love stories like that, full of quotes from 'insiders' saying things that anybody could have said

"She will be one of the main faces of BBC Sport alongside the likes of Sue Barker."
So she's not going to be the main face, but one of the main faces, and not alongside Sue Barker, but alongside the likes of Sue Barker!

I can't blame her, but the BBC Sport department is overflowing with female presenters as it is. It's a strong central male presenter they need - and they have got in the likes of John Inverdale, but they don't use him as well as they should!


She's not going to get any live football though really - Five would be her best option for that.

doesn't mean you have immediately discount it though - were you not one of the people who dismissed the Des Lynam story just because it was in a tabloid?

I'm not discounting it it's probably true, it's just the way they try to make it seem true before it actually is

If it is true, then the likes of Ray Stubbs or Hazel Irvine would probably end up being snubbed and leave themselves

The sports portfolio at the BBC is a lot wider than ITV so she's bound to have more opportunities, especially with an olympic games not that far away.

Live football will be fronted by Linekar as long as he's there, but I suppose they may stick her on Football Focus (isn't the current presenter doing the Ashes highlights soon?) and possibly even give her MOTD2 if Adrian Chiles get too busy with a relaunched One Show.

It says in the artical that she would be presenting " football, international rugby, golf, tennis and athletics. " Well anytinis better than UEFA Cup and the Boat Race.

Is this news official yet or just rumour? If Gabby does come to the BBC keep her away from Wimbledon because Sue Barker is brilliant on that.
