I think however much cash they pocketed from a pay-TV deal if the games left FTA TV in the UK (and possibly even the BBC) or Australia the games would be pretty much done.

In fairness, aside from the odd big home medal event how many average punters are going to care about the Commonwealth Games anyway? It's slightly different when it's being held in the UK, but otherwise it's seen by many as a bit of an anachronism. The "friendly games" tag is a giveaway.

If someone's willing to pay extra cash to secure it for their channel, and if people are keen on paying that channel for the privilege, then let them.

I suspect the reality is that the Commonwealth Games are more of a duty event for the BBC than a high-profile event. They leave it later and later to confirm the rights - presumably in the hope that someone else will bid. But that never seems to happen...

I'm in no way suggesting that the BBC will be half-hearted in their coverage or commitment once they have bought the rights - the BBC Sport team are too professional to do that.

That said - the Salford 'conference room' studio for the Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games is a sad reflection on BBC Sport. Losing a bought-out studio like TC5 when they moved to Salford was a real pity. Personally I think the shows would look better in a nicely designed 'real' studio than an office with a view of a grey Salford skyline. Doesn't really scream 'Sunny Gold Coast'...

Well as far as I could tell there wasn't exactly a queue of cities determined to take this on after Glasgow. The Gold Coast approach appears to be "yeah, we'll do it, but we're not going to go nuts". So taking it off terrestrial television completely could well have killed it.

Online coverage is as limited as we feared - just one hockey game, one netball and one basketball plus coverage of the evening sessions in swimming and cycling and the final session of the gymnastics alongside coverage of the triathlon. Still no red button schedule but wouldn't be surprised if the three team sports are on that.

Really is poor - pisses me off how they keep advertising their "extra 1000 hours" of streamed sport when they're actually offering 1000 less hours of the games compared to Glasgow.

Just seen the Salford 'studio'. My first instant thought was that it looks very CBBC...

However much sand and surf you put on an office floor, and how ever many palm trees and pot plants you put in the back of shot, you still can't escape a damp, grey Salford skyline behind you...

Such a pity they couldn't afford/haven't gone for a real studio with some nice warm, sunny, Gold Coast inspired screen images behind Clare and the guests.

They should have relocated to a garden centre, would have saved moving the plants in lol

Seems due to some quirk of the rights process that Eurosport has live Swimming coverage.

Unless I'm mistaken, their graphics for the 'Coming Up / Headlines' sections seem to be using Gill Sans, rather than Reith. Makes you wonder why after many months down the line, there's still inconsistent use of it across their coverage and sports news output. Even if they can't use the font yet, I would've thought they could have at least supplied the regions with new sports templates by now.

What’s with this #getinspired DOG on the highlights? Was it the same on the live coverage? It’s awful.

That's a creative decision for the Commonwealth Games graphics package, just like how the Winter Olympics had a custom narrow all-caps font. It just so happens that it's Gill Sans.

Really not liking the BBC graphics or titles - all feels a bit cheap. The host graphics not much to shout about either, but they never are.

Catching up on the overnight coverage and what is the point in hosting from a virtually empty beach which to viewers at least seems far removed from the action?
