Well, a new series of Commerical Breakdown started last night with Jimmy Carr at the helm.

I know they have all of these rules for the show - because of course ads are not allowed on the Beeb - in previous series the Royal Charter said that no adverts from Britain can be allowed at all - this was recently changed so ads can be from Britain given that they are not currently being broadcast.

Shurely it wouldn't matter anyway - an advert is an advert, regardless of the country or whether it is still on air or not - the ads are being broadcast in their entirety - so they are still advertising!

It's not a new series, it's been on for a few weeks.

It's not a new concept it's been going since the early 1990's albeit hosed by Jasper Carrott. At the end of the day it's showing adverts and it's focusing of what happens in them NOT about the product, and usually whoever presents it does a mickey take on the product anyway. Such as Jasper Carrott in one episode saying KFC stood for Kan't Find the Chicken...

Yes, technically they are advertising, but they're not being paid for it. That's the important part. As long as the BBC doesn't receive any money from any source other than the license fee, I don't see a problem.

Can anyone list all the previous presenters of this show ?

On the subject of these type of clip shows, I take it Tarrant on TV is no longer in production ?

At a long shot: Japser Carrott, Rory McGrath, Jo Brand, Ruby Wax, (I think) Jon Culshaw is all I can think of.

Carrott's were the best, they still get repeated from time to time.

I think Tarrant on TV had it's day years ago, it was at it's peak in the mid 1990's when that was the only place where you could see Jerry Springer and Takeshi's Castle-like programmes on British TV, and the gags around it suggesting we wouldn't see stuff like that on British TV, yeah right. Laughing

There is a diffrence between showing an advert for the purposes of criticism, education or entertainment and showing an advert for money. There's nothing wrong with the former on the BBC, in fact it is more difficult to broadcast a programem about adverts on a non-BBC channel because of the rules on due prominence.

Lots of BBC programmes have shown adverts, in fact there's been several whole series about the history of advertising. Even the news shows adverts at some point, there nothing wrong with it because no money changes hands

Surely the country of origin does matter, if the product isn't available in this country then it's not an advert!

I think that's always been the case, the old Jasper Carrott ones from the early 90s used to have plenty of UK adverts. I remember the John Cleese anti-smoking ad being on it, which would have been fairly recent at the time. "This is the average amount of ash from a cigarette smoker. Of course, they're not all cremated..."

And there was a series called 'Washes Whiter' in 1990 which featured nothing but UK TV adverts
