This is on now. Cheap programme to compile really, they've just cut archive interviews and clips. Still its great they've dug out the old idents.

Well let's see, so far we've had:

BBC2 1977, 1979, 1982
BBC1 1980, 1984 (excellently "extended" into 16:9 BTW!)

Incidentally, one of the Tittybangbang girls has just commented on how she hopes the new To The Manor Born" will retain the feel of the original". Pity whoever decided to give it a filmic effect didn't feel the same way...

On all of the trailers I've seen it has a videotape feel to the outdoor scenes, unless it's a case of the actual show having a filmic effect and the trailers don't. This always confused me. For years I thought Heartbeat was shot on film, then they showed a trailer and it was the same scene but on videotape. That was my first introduction to the filmic effect.

Wahey - the 1985 robins!

And the clip neatly double-looped too.

I'm sure the robin on the 'BBC1' used to look around and then the head would swing back or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Initially, the heads did swing back as shown. However, the model broke down on Christmas Day and as a result of the emergency repair, the heads nodded up and down from then on.

Just as you were replying I have just comeback from your wonderful site and watched the clips of the ident. Yes it did look around as I remembered but I had no idea it broke down on Christmas Day. Shocked

All of that hard work and then on the big day it all goes blue tits up!! See what I did there? Smile

Have they show the sort of Victorian/Edwardian BBC1 ident from 1979?

No...and they won't.

Simply because none of us have any footage in our archives barring Jim Edwards at TV World.

The screen grabs on TV Ark were all that could be salvaged from the source tape - no moving footage sadly.

The robins clip shouldn't have been looped. The 1974 BBC Two ident was though (for obvious reasons).

Does it not exist anywhere then? I can remember it even now and the music they used for the trailers. The one that sticks out for me is a trailer for Rings On Their Fingers, the band would play and then it would zoom in through a window pane I think to the clip of the programme.

I should get out more.

The technician who did the repair wrote about his experiences in Keith Hamer's TV Graphics Review. He had to phone his boss at home to get permission, interrupting his family Christmas.
