Where is the clip of Edmonds balsting the robins with a shotgun? I remember vividly seeing him do that on the very first The Late Late Breakfast Show of the new year.

Immediately after the off-air clips of the robins.

Lovely to see the clip of Edmonds blowing up the robins again. Funny how time plays tricks with the mind; I always thought the robins suddenly exploded midway during the actual anno into the show, whereupon the camera panned out to reveal a smug Edmonds with smoking gun in hand. I was only 10 at the time though.

Incidentally the 1986 ident (the holly leaves dancing round the tree) was the winning entry in a Blue Peter viewers competition to design that year's BBC1 theme. I remember spending hours drawing up intricate storyboards for my own design, explaining how they'd work as idents, holding captions and menus. I was fuming when they announced the winner who'd just scribbled his stupid holly leaf idea with crayons on a bit of dog-eared A4. I still think the finished thing looks sh*te and feel quite bitter about it.

I think the Christmas ident for 1986 was actually a Children's BBC competition that Philip Schofield launched and not Blue Peter, as I remember seeing the winner sitting in the Broom Cupboard with Philip as they were going to reveal it for the first time.

And I thought the Holly ident wasn't that good either. And nothing says Christmas like steel drums does it!?! Rolling Eyes

Though there were three winners, weren't there? One with holly leaves, one with a star and one with a Christmas tree, and I seem to remember the storyboard with the star had quite a lot of work put into it.

Instead they combined all three into one animation which looked absolutely nothing like any of their entries. What a swizz!

I didn't hear anything about the 1986 competition until after the event. But I don't think anyone saw the ident proper until 9:05am on Christmas Eve morning - I could be wrong of course; BP unveiled theirs 24 hours in advance.

I remember seeing the big reveal one afternoon on Children's BBC . I just hate saying CBBC, Andy Crane was the first person to call it CBBC as well so I blame him!!

Also, Christmas 1986 was the first time the COW had a full day off since launch. For whatever reason the robins were deemed inappropriate for use with the National Anthem at closedown so it was the last thing to be seen on BBC1 on 24-26 Dec 1985 - completely laughable now, considering we get penguins into the news.

I didn't see Charlie Brooker's special last year - does anyone know where I can see it?

I can't actually remember it myself, so great to see again. Cool

Also shows Edmonds getting stroppy on the Christmas Breakfast show.

Whilst looking at those TV Room bits and pieces, the Christmas Day 1985 (I think) schedule has The Live Live Breakfast Show, was it really live on Christmas Day, or was it just because it wasn't late?

It was certainly live in 1984. BBC1 announcer Mike Gamble, after switching to the programme a few seconds early, wished Noel a Merry Christmas and he reciprocated: "Thank you very much Michael!"

I know this is mostly about idents but BBC2 is showing a great show called The Comedy Christmas and lots of old BBC1 & 2 Christmas idents and trailers feature in it.

This is on now. Cheap programme to compile really, they've just cut archive interviews and clips. Still its great they've dug out the old idents.

I think that the Only Fools Christmas trilogy in 1996 was the last of the traditional sitcom christmas IMO.

Happy Christmas!

Well let's see, so far we've had:

BBC2 1977, 1979, 1982
BBC1 1980, 1984 (excellently "extended" into 16:9 BTW!)

Incidentally, one of the Tittybangbang girls has just commented on how she hopes the new To The Manor Born" will retain the feel of the original". Pity whoever decided to give it a filmic effect didn't feel the same way...

Wasn't expecting to see the clip of the "nice man in the white coat" making trees for '83 Laughing
