Surprised no-one's mentioned 'Cannon and Ball's Plaza Patrol'
http://www.comedykings.co.uk/tv/plaza2.shtml

It, along with a Gameshow called 'Cannon and Ball's Casino' were the 2 series they made for Yorkshire after leaving LWT, both didn't do very well and their TV career kinda stopped there.

BTW, annoyingly the BBC website has removed the Comedy Guide

Yes I'm very annoyed that they've taken down the Comedy Guide. Not sure if the replacement is up but I wonder how comprehensive it'll be. Completely forgot about Plaza Patrol. But I did like the two series of the Cannon & Ball sitcom. It's a shame Eric & Ernie didn't a series where it was a sitcom showing them in their flat. That would have been really good in my opinion.

Sounds like it will only have BBC programmes in it. It is available as The Radio Times Guide to TV Comedy in the shops. A great reference book, but having a cross-referenced hyperlinked version online was very useful

Yes that really was the original theme tune, one of Ronnie Hazlehurst's rare mistakes. I remember John Sullivan saying that he wanted something cockney sounding and when this came back he thought it just didn't work.

Then he wrote the new theme that was supposed to be performed by Chas & Dave but they couldn't make it, so he performed it instead. The rest is history.

Funnily enough when the BBC repeated the first series a few years ago they used the tune we were all familiar with and not the original.

Laughing Shame that OFAH theme wasn't included as an extra on the DVD release, but then again this range has no features.

Think that's bad though check out this version of the Doctor Who theme:

Shocked Laughing Now that really doesn't work, even Keff McCullough's (sp) version wasn't as bad.

Anyway back on topic, anyone remember Filfthy, Rich & Catflap ? I got the DVD & though it was alright, I presume it didn't do so well hence the single series?

Then there was Hardwicke House, which was pulled after two outings due to viewer complaints.
To this day, the remaining five episodes, in the planned series of seven, have never been shown.

I heard that all copies were destroyed. Is that true or an urban myth? I wonder if people would find it as offensive now. It rated fairly well and I remember an episode featuring a South African family called Van Der Git.

It's an urban myth - I believe that ITV Central still have the series in their archives.

Is it wrong to say that I enjoyed Up The Elephant And Round The Castle? Embarassed The first series was a massive hit, the second wasn't as good. I did like Home James as well. Sorry! Embarassed

I remember quite liking it too, but then I was a child!

You're right it wasn't a flop at all, JIm Davidson was very popular and mainstream back then.

Bottle Boys was originally meant as a starring vehicle for Jim Davidson, but as he had just signed up to do Up The Elephant And Round The Castle for Thames, LWT's John Birt (the same one who was later DG of the BBC) decided instead to go for Robin Askwith. Not that it made much of a difference!

And what about Southern TV's vehicle for John Inman, Take a Letter, Mr Jones? Now that really had the word "dud" stamped all over it.

I sort of liked that one as well. But I was only little then. He did do an even worse one for Thames where he played a guy called Neville who was left a sweet shop or something. UK Gold showed it a few years ago. It had a catchphrase something like 'how's your rock cock.'

That was Odd Man Out, which was set in a seaside rock factory.

Pops up on UK Gold repeats of the first episode and first Christmas episode quite often, well very often but you know what UKTV Gold is like.

You're on the right track..

1) It was made by LWT, not Thames
2) It had dialogue, Rowan Atkinson played a student who asked a girl out on a date, and I think he also played a foreign waiter in the same programme aswell.

It was also home to the sketch of how to make a cup of Coffee when you break your cup, something that was repeated on the beginning of Bean: The Ultimate disaster Movie.
