So am I the only one that objects to Coke (and others) using the word 'Holiday' at this time of year?

Holidays are not coming, unless you're going Skiing.... for the majority of us Holidays are coming in July and August. It's like those Gap adverts years ago: 'Babies, that's holiday'.... er no Holiday is sun, sea and sand.

The fact is that the word 'Holiday' means something very diffrent in the UK than it does in the US (their 'vacation' is our 'holiday') If they're going to broadcast american adverts here they'd may as well tailor them reflect the local vanacular.

Probably...

hol·i·day n.

1. A day free from work that one may spend at leisure, especially a day on which custom or the law dictates a halting of general business activity to commemorate or celebrate a particular event.
2. A religious feast day; a holy day.

3. Chiefly British: A vacation. Often used in the phrase on holiday.

What's to object?

Yes, but how to the general public use the word holiday?

No-one says 'did you have a good holiday' in January or 'Happy Holidays'. It's 'Christmas' and 'New Year' - 'Did you have a good Christmas', 'Happy Christmas'

That's one reason why I'm wondering why people on here have been going on about these Coca Cola adverts since about September as if they are the best thing since sliced bread. They are just crappy american adverts shown over here really!

Moving on, anyone get the feeling Tesco are mis-judging the whole Christmas thing this time? I can see these cheap white adverts being dropped at some point in the next 6 months

That's true, but I doubt there's any confusion as to what is meant by "holiday" in those particular advertisements.

Those ads seem to be giving Tesco the image of being the "cheap" supermarket, which can be both a good and a bad thing. Sainsbury's seem to be aiming for a slightly more upmarket image at the moment - not that it's working...

Something that has got me thinking, is why do advertisers tend not to advertise on Christmas Day? Even if they have nothing to sell, wouldn't it be nice for them to just have an advert saying Merry Christmas from... just to reinforce their brands on people?

Also, do you think that advertisers would be more attracted to advertise on christmas day if ITV put on a strong programmee line up?

It's more the other way round, ITV don't put strong programming on because the advertisers aren't around. Although they have got better in the last couple of years.

The fact is that come 6pm on Christmas Eve, all the shops close and no-one needs to persuade you to buy presents from their shop. They go suddenly from very high demand for advertising (basic supply and demand means that they can charge lots) to a very low demand for advertising. All that's left are adverts for sales starting on the 26th & 27th, Alka Seltzer and household goods.

This is the reason why I'm A Celebrity, Ant & Dec, X-Factor/Pop Idol and the biggets Coronation street story of the year have all been on in the Autumn

There's no confusion, it's just more encroaching Americanism.

The same wouldn't happen if it was the other way round - a British advert in America without changes to Brit terminology.

It's still a bit mean not to have say an Ant & Dec Christmas Day special, how much would it cost the network extra for that?

Plus most probably it's the reason that Christmas is sponsered by Rennie!

Wouldn't cost much, but why put it on at Christmas when they could put them on a few weeks ealier and rake in more cash?

I'm not saying either or, I'm saying both. They did put it on earlier, they did make a lot of money - most probably, so why haven't they done a Christmas Special, it seems ideal to me.

Though perhaps I'm the only person that DOESN'T want to sit through 2 hours of a murder!
