Did anyone noticed that CNN has added a background music when "JUST IN" banner was shown?

Not sure if this applies to CNN International.

And, what's the difference between "Just In" and "Breaking News"?

I think Just In is like updates and breaking news is like what happened 2 years ago today Shocked

CNN (America and International) have recently got VERY touchy about the use of breaking news, and where it's appropriate.

Chris Cramer (president of international networks) recently spoke about the fact that "breaking news" was being undervalued by it's excessive use for even very trivial matters.

As such, "Just In" has been adopted across every CNN network as a term more favourable to "breaking news". It's used when stories are deemed to be important but not to the extent that they'll be followed as-they-happen.

Breaking News is now restricted only for serious (and in International's case) networked programmes. You have to appreciate that CNNI has many different regional opts - Europe, South America, Asia, etc. Asia may be in World Sport when Europe is in World News. As such, Asia has to be recalled whenever there is breaking news on the European coverage. Asia would not be recall for a "Just In" story, but would for a "breaking news" story.

Not exactly clear cut, but it makes sense when you compare what they have now to what they had before.

Thanks for the explanation.

Now how about the short music they played on the background?

Well they were using 'Just In' for the Yasser Arafat story last night. Can't get more serious or international than that!

I suppose they used it in this case because it was something that had happened and they weren't expecting it to develop any further, unlike breaking news when more info comes in all the time.

An example:

JUST IN - Queen dead - it's not breaking news, there's no more info to give, she's not going to get any deader!

BREAKING NEWS - plane crash - fatality figures going up, cause of crash etc, all stuff that comes in gradually

Strangely, this is exactly what Sky News used to do before around 1998. You'd very rarely see "Breaking News", indeed only on stories being followed live with all other news cleared from the agenda (bomb alerts, plane crashes, that sort of thing).

They'd use "Just In" for other things (helecopter crash, someone charged in a well-known case etc.) with "Latest" used for a development on a story.

Remember when CNN's famous old Breaking News strap would stand-down to "Developing Story" after an hour or so?

I'd much prefer it if all channels went back to that type of thing.

Perhaps N24 could adopt it when they relaunch!

Sounds like a really good idea to me. Sky News and News 24 seem to be 'crying wolf' over 'Breaking News'. The problem is, when something really big does happen, the 'Breaking News' strap doesn't have the impact it should, as it's always used for trivial 'updates'.

Well on the BBC One News update at 11 they had the BREAKING NEWS that Johnny Cash had died.

That's not breaking. He's dead. It's sad. End of story.

Should have been NEWS JUST IN.

Yes, absolutely! The old CNN strap was - despite it's dullness - the most effective one probably ever used. It didn't get in the way, it didn't constantly flick about and flash in and out, it just sat there with a big headline.

Sky's red tags (which in effect they still use today) always used to be used like this. "Latest" was probably the most frequently used, although they did have a "breaking news" strap too. They've only started to use breaking news so excessively since the relaunch in 2001. The 1998 look used "Just In" tags for court cases all the time. I think it was just because producing straps 7 years ago wasn't quite as easy as it is today, so it was preferably to flash up a prepared graphic rather than go to the trouble of producing another one. Fox News used to have "Fox Flash" and "Fox News Alert" but god knows what the difference between them was.

I briefly saw some of CNN's coverage of Arafat, and the bit I did see was tagged as Breaking News, so it's possible they just flicked about.

On the subject of music and just in/breaking news on CNN - certainly CNN have a breaking news sting and a scary sounding music bed. It could well have been that they were returning from a break or something and so you got the World News music by mistake.

Probably the same as Sky have copied off them with their Sky News Alert and the simulaneous use of Sky News Flash and Breaking News!

I think the Fox News Alert bell is quite chilling!

AFAIK, the "Flash" was just for minor stories, but the "Alert" was the significant, live events.

They've just gone for "Alert" on everything now.

The Fox News Alert strap used to be HUGE. Probably the biggest strap ever seen on television. It used to have the Fox News logo and "ALERT" in a box, which actually flashed red like the top of a police car. The flashing stopped after about 2 minutes, when it just sat there.

That was around the time of "little Elian" so in 2000 I think. Their straps were actually pretty well designed then - now they're sh-te.
