Wow 48 seconds in this video shows CNN was broadcasting GMTV as you can see the CNN LIVE logo from when breaking news was that princess diana died.. I guess they wanted to know the actual reaction of britain and how they are reporting it. Would GMTV even know that CNN was rebroadcasting their programme across the world ?
They also replayed a few minutes from the start of one of the hours of the BBC's coverage, complete with the "This is BBC Television from London" announcement and the flag & anthem, introducing it with something like "here's how the news was officially announced to the British people".
It's no different to 9/11 when the likes of ITN and Sky News took American news feeds. I'm assuming you'd get better coverage from the country the news has come from.

Quite a bit different. The UK took feeds from the US networks on 9/11 as the action was taking place there and then in New York with no time for the UK stations to get cameras/satellite feeds ready. CNN etc would have had a team in London to cover the aftermath of Diana's death.

I believe that coverage was from GMTV the morning of her death though - wasn't she only confirmed to have passed away at around 4am/5am?

The clip in question (featuring Jim Clancy and a moustache):

The term 'The BBC, the official broadcaster of the death of Princess Diana' doesn't sound right at all.
It's odd now looking back to see how they presented it on the BBC, with generic BBC announcements & the "This is BBC Television from London" opening from Martyn Lewis.

I shall be surprised if we don't see it again this year.

The plans are very different now, as was seen when the Queen Mother died. The existence of BBC News Channel has made a lot of the old ways of doing things redundant - they can just take over and run with it.
Interesting on that first clip are the captions on Nickleodeon and UK Living pointing viewers to Sky News and the BBC. I knew that was the policy as I worked at some satellite channels around that time but I've never seen them.
The policy was that the 'Sky Multichannel' channels were all supposed to point towards Sky News the only exceptions I think were UK Living and UK Gold as they were connected to the BBC (I don't know if Cartoon Network was exempt due to CNN). I wonder what the independent channels (I.e. those not connected to a news broadcaster) would do today

CNN has long had ITN as it's UK 'affiliate', I wonder if they were simulcasting ITV as a part of that deal? Either not realising the difference between ITN and GMTV or by arrangement.
