Some feeds are broadcast in the clear while others are encrypted, it all depends on the sensitivity of the content, some of it can be picked up on a non Sky box, but some feeds use 4:2:2 picture format which means you can only pick it up on a professional quality sateliite receiver or PCI Sat card which has 4:2:2 plugin.

Do they still use tapes to keep stuff on these days? Or are they all considered old hat?
And those feed images? Are they transmitted in the clear on satellite?
I hear that it's possible to view these sorts of things on the BBC's TV system in the newsroom at the touch of a button - is this true?

Well yes, sorry for discrediting these possibilities. I was merely thinking of things from an independent perspective as that's where my knowledge lays, but you have me wondering now - is there a chance in-house productions would also carry the adverts on their tape copies? Hmmm...

Depends on whether the show is recorded from the netowrk output or studio. Most likely to be studio these days. I do know for a fact though that the archive tapes of TV-am include the adverts (and the teletext).

It's amazing how a topic about clean and dirty feeds can go so long......
As Mr. Sands pointed out studio recordings tend to be main, backing and ISO. The ISO being chosen by the director, either by telling the vision mixer to select the apopriate aux source, or the director having a matrix hard panel selector and picking their own ISO.
Quite a few years ago I almost got involved in a Soap (on a certain square) that was setting up a system where the studio out was recorded on tape, but the output was additionally recorded directly onto hard disk where an off-line edit could start straight away, guess that what happens now.
Rehaersals are never really recorded, got a few dodgy VHS's though...... but technology is changing. Transmission these days is rarely off tape, and almost always off server, with a second server as a guard source. However, once on server the programme material is then stored on to a deep archive device where it can be restored at a later date without having the transmission tape available.

ISO - Isolation feed. A recording of a camera direct, so that in an edit you have got a different picture to cut to if the main recording is not suitable.
I see, thank you. You know the screen next to the TX monitor in the gallery which is mainly used as a cue - is there a name for that?

Preview monitor, usually what is cut up on the preview (preset) bank of a vision mixer, or selected on a matrix router.
