Could classic Presentation come back into use?

Ah, but ARD have only recently allowed Taggesshau presenters to use autocue. I'm not kidding, it was deliberately delivered off paper script until last year (maybe the year before).

A clock, with a second hand, broadcast on a system that can introduce massive amounts of delay and can't be seen accurately by a single viewer is just wrong.

Someone should tell ARD...

(Yes, it's a digital clock, but surely the same point applies?)

What is with that UGLY zoom at the top of the programme! Awkward. They do it in every edition too. Surprised it's lasted that long.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a clock, even if it reaches the viewer 20 seconds "late". To me, the clock is saying "this programme started at 6pm on the dot. The news programme you're watching is the state of the world at it was when these pictures were originated at 18.00.00"

The clock doesn't have to mean "this is the time in your house NOW", it's showing the time at Television Centre when the programme started. Are you suggesting we rename the "News at 10" to "News at 10.00:20" or should have called "BBC News 24" something like "BBC News 24 + 00:20" ?

Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt at all that some bores at the BBC said "we can't show a clock, it's a breach of audience trust" or some similar sh!te. Doesn't make it right though, they're just covering their backsides.

I still don't understand the digital delay argument and I can't see any clear evidence for it.

Wasn't it Einstein himself who said that time is relative to the observer, anyway?

I cant see all the point about digital delay or any other excuse for not wanting a clock. Breakfast, BBC2, Daybreak and Channel 4 all use a clock (digital form) at breakfast hours. So what is the difference? Anyway for me it doesn't bother me if its 20 second or 1 minute delay for me its all 60 minutes difference!!!! I would rather see a clcok before the news as it gives the news programme more gravitas!

ZDF also have a clock before the news, as do many of the regional broadcasters and even some private ones. Furthermore, there are plenty of clocks before news on the continent, including (from memory) VRT, SVT, YLE, DR, RTS (Serbia) and several Russian channels. Some use it because the've always had, but others have (re-)introduced the clock because they realised it was an effective way to introduce the news.

Some googling suggests the switch happened in 2009. Not certain, though.
